Israeli forces have killed at least 20,000 children in Gaza since October 2023. This is a deeply shameful statistic for our collective humanity – a horrific new low. Although our ability to work is severely limited in Gaza, we're still providing nutrition screening and treatment to children under 5, pregnant and breastfeeding mothers at our two primary healthcare clinics and ten mother-baby areas in Khan Younis and Deir al-Balah. This is Radwa*, 30, holding her youngest daughter, Basma*, 1. We gave Basma Ready to Use Therapeutic Food (peanut paste) to help her recover from malnutrition. Although we were able to help Basma on this occasion, supplies of this paste are now running out. Well over 100 children have already died of starvation in Gaza and famine has been confirmed in Gaza City. Keir Starmer said that child poverty is a priority for his government and that he would reduce it by the end of the parliament. However, over a year into his tenure, child poverty has risen to a record-high of 4.5 million. Without urgent action, this will be the first Labour government to preside over a significant rise in child poverty — a record no one should want. Every day of delay is another day wasted. Since the summer recess, over 4,000 children have been pushed into poverty as a result of the two-child limit. The time for action is now, the forthcoming child poverty strategy must involve bold action, including scrapping the two-child limit and benefit cap to help the lowest income families. The children killed in Gaza had names, and favourite subjects in school. They wanted to be teachers, doctors and astronauts when they grew up - the same as children in the UK and across the world. They were, and still are, someone's everything: their entire universe. Children are always the first to suffer in any war. We refuse to allow their suffering to become normalised.

What have we become… 😡

For every politician and journalist who supported Israel's onslaught, or stayed silent: This photograph should haunt you for the rest of your life. You will never scrub the shame away. No future achievement, however great, will ever erase what you helped inflict on Gaza.

Please tell me, what kind of person starves children to death? What kind of person shoots starving children?
