After a strange and testing academic year, I'm so pleased to have finally submitted my final Master's work. Thank you @LJMU @LJMUPHI for everything. Hopefully not long until I'm a @AfNutr qualified nutritionist, as nutrition/health are being seen for how important they really are

E2 - All dietitians appreciate the social aspect of food and mealtimes *Food is about much more than just nutrition! *Social isolation can be a barrier to good nutritional intake Patients admitted may be malnourished due to being socially isolated neglecting their health (1)

D1 - Calculating nutritional requirements - We cater for each patient’s needs by calculating their nutritional requirements. This estimates calories/protein based on body weight and disease condition (kcal/kg or g/kg) This is where the @BDA_PENG pocket guide comes in handy

In #dietitiansweek2021 I’d like to make the following plea on behalf of my dietetic colleagues 👉Don’t refer patients to the dietitian for a low albumin 👉Use your noggin and think about why the albumin is low 👉DO NOT fall back on the urban myth that it’s nutritional!!!

C1 – Bowels Another useful tool we use as dietitians is the ‘stool chart’. Constipation can be a significant barrier to appetite, as can loose stools due to fear of making these worse. In some cases, the changing colour of stools can be due to malabsorption @BDA_Dietitians

B2 We do look closely at U&E’s. Consider Sodium, Urea and Creatinine which can tell us about hydration/renal function Or electrolytes (Potassium, Phosphate, Magnesium) in patients who are at risk of ‘refeeding syndrome’ Read about this here: ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/article…

A1 Topical with #MAW2021 next week, in our Trust we use the MUST tool. On admission this helps to identify the risk of malnutrition. It uses weight, loss/gain & dietary intakes It is important to remember that patients with obesity can still be at risk of malnutrition @BAPENUK

One of my roles within the royal has been implementing MUST training sessions to the wards. Looking at what malnutrition is, how to screen for it, how to treat it and how to make dietetic referrals. All of the staff have been very open to improving this aspect of their role!
