It’s beyond frustrating that Carolina is winning the Cup with former members of the Oilogosphere who would likely ridicule this Babcock hiring just like the rest of us
Why do this? It makes no sense. It’s not like Babcock won multiple Cups. He won once 18 years ago, lost in the Final the next year and then won three whole series the rest of his career
Response via text from an NHL player agent when I asked about Oilers coaching rumour…
“The opportunity to play with McDavid or Draisaitl is diminished with the potential to be coached by Babcock. It is a valid concern voiced to me by a few of my clients.”
Tim Barnes, Sunny Mehta, Tyler Dellow, and Dennis King, who were ridiculed by our mainstream media for their analytics, are all Stanley Cup Champions. How many Stanley Cup rings do Spec, Jimbo, Gregs, DVD, Jones, Leavins, and Staples have?
Bob Stauffer:
“When the decision was made to remove Jay Woodcroft, I do not believe the Oilers top players were consulted on the change to bring in Kris Knoblauch”
I’m starting to feel that the Oilers’ Cup window actually may be closed.
It’s not just that they can’t keep the band together. The Pacific division is going to be a monster with San Jose and Anaheim upcoming.
There have been so many missteps and they’re aging out. Where do you find another Ekholm or Hyman once they’re too long in the tooth?
They haven’t replaced Kane, Perry or Kulak. Not as they are today, but as they were during the runs. And for all his flaws, you can’t just subtract Nurse outright and get better.
Broberg and Holloway could be filling in those gaps but of course that won’t happen.
The goaltending is worse today than it has ever been.
And of course McDavid looms large.
Unless Bowman can work some kind of magic and right the ship, this thing is listing quietly into the water
One thing I’m not excited to lose about Nurse is his truculence. Kane, Perry, Nurse were a world class pain in the ass. Not sure where the sandpaper is going to come from
I’d have no issue with Darryl Sutter as an option. During his Calgary years his teams were second in the NHL in xGF%, fourth in xGF/60 and xGA/60.
Got unlucky against the Oilers (good) but the Flames were 3rd in xGF% in the playoffs that year and third-last in Sv%
This is hilarious on its face, but Hiller’s teams actually had excellent underlying numbers during his time in LA. Right there with the Oilers. Just didn’t have game breakers
There’s no timeline on how quickly this can be carried out. The Oilers are aware of this. Players involved, etc in 2023 will have to be interviewed. If Babcock were to back out at this stage, a league source says there would be no reason to investigate.
If the Oilers are aware of *significant* additional claims against Babcock, they shouldn’t be pursuing this. If they’re not, it’s an indictment of their hiring process.
Either way, an organizational failure
If #Oilers elect to continue down the path with Mike Babcock, sources say the #NHLPA is in receipt of “significant” additional claims from their own investigation with players that were not publicly reported in 2023.
Those claims were presented to #NHL prior to his resignation.
Mike Babcock won a Stanley Cup with Detroit, but he had a super team… of coaches
Assistants included:
Todd McLellan
Paul MacLean (later won Jack Adams)
Video coach Jay Woodcroft
I dislike this hire very much but the assistants are going to be just as critical
Sources: The Edmtn Oilers are consulting with the NHLPA to see if there are objections that must be resolved before potentially hiring Mike Babcock. Amid allegations of invading players privacy, Babcock resigned in CBJ as Head Coach in 2023. Further investigation may be required.
