Do coaches/scouts actually attend travel tournaments with any level of frequency? If so, what are they looking for?
-Certain position players?
-Players they already know about?
-Seeing who stands out?
-Just watching to watch?
Also, how far into the future are they scouting?

How do YOU motivate the unmotivatable?
Some kids are on the roster, and they don't seem to care if they're in the dugout or on the field. They won't hustle, they don't move with urgency...they're just sort of there to have fun.
That's fine, but what about the REST of the team?

I think I'm going to work on replacing "hustle" with "urgency".
Some kids are doing some things fast (for them), but maybe like 50% of things. They're "hustling", but just with the first task when there's more to do.

I was talking to my team post game on Saturday (12U softball) about a couple timid plays during a game, and encouraging them to keep taking risks and good chances.
One piped up and said "Basically, don't be afraid to fail. Be afraid of not trying."
That kid gets it.

My daughter told me she's happy I'm her dad and her coach because I try to help everyone grow even if we don't win as much as we could.
She's 12.
A teammate of hers told me once that she's happy I'm her coach and she loves being on our team.
Dude...what's better than that??

Youth coaches:
Unless you're a Premier Elite Triple Crown Platinum Rewards Member All-Scholarship team, most of the kids you'll coach won't play in college. They're playing for today.
Get ALL your kids into every game and let them have fun competing!!! Give them memories!

My 12-year old picked up with a very new 14U team this weekend. Most of them are new to travel and not very skilled so it was a rough weekend against some really tough teams.
Know one of her favorite moments? Stealing my speaker and having a dance party after lunch.

What's the benefit of a 18U baseball team bringing in two college-age players and playing them over their younger, developing players?
One player saw 5 minutes on the field out of 4 games
It was a round robin
They lost all 4 games anyway

Only one chance in this lifetime…
Like watching sunset at the beach from the most foreign seat in the cosmos, I couldn’t resist a cell phone video of Earthset. You can hear the shutter on the Nikon as @Astro_Christina is hammering away on 3-shot brackets and capturing those exceptional Earthset photos through the 400mm lens. @AstroVicGlover was in window 3 watching with @Astro_Jeremy next to him.
I could barely see the Moon through the docking hatch window but the iPhone was the perfect size to catch the view…this is uncropped, uncut with 8x zoom which is quite comparable to the view of the human eye. Enjoy.

A message for young people:
The world is full of folks who have a lot of opinions, love to point out the negative, harp on the failures (at least what they see as failures) of others and are pessimists at heart. Yet offer no substance, are generic, have no real solutions and bow out when it’s time to get real.
Social media gives a voice to individuals like this. Don’t fall for the trap. Don’t hop on the bandwagon. Be original. Be genuine. Be productive. Offer real solutions. Be optimistic. Be someone who finds a way to make a positive impact in the world around you.
