Introducing OpenOrigins Source, a new mobile app that gives creators, journalists, and platforms the ability to prove their photos and videos are real from the moment of capture. The free app targets the surge of generative AI images and deepfakes that are now flooding social media channels with images and videos that are virtually indistinguishable from reality. Your content is only as valuable as the trust people place in it. Download on iOS or Google Play today. openorigins.com/insights/blo…

In case of doubt: the real answer was always provenance. Proof that the content you're seeing real. The war on misinformation isn't over, it was just being fought on the wrong battlefield. 🎯

@OpenOrigins was featured in a UK government report on deepfake detection, highlighting embedding and provenance as one of the most promising directions for solving the problem. The UK government's conclusion is clear: detection breaks down in the real world. Compression breaks it. Editing breaks it. New models break it. You can’t build trust by analyzing pixels after the fact. Trust can only be built at the moment of origin.

🎙️ Ep. 701 OpenOrigins | Fighting Deepfakes with Blockchain (feat. Dr Manny Ahmed) — — — For episode 701 of the BlockHash Podcast, host Brandon Zemp is joined by Dr Manny Ahmed, CEO & Founder of @OpenOrigins, a media authenticity company that fights deepfakes by establishing an immutable record of content provenance. As part of his PhD in Computer Security at the University of Cambridge, he developed a blockchain-based media provenance framework years before generative AI made creating synthetic media a matter of routine. That research forms the technical foundation of OpenOrigins and continues to guide the company’s approach to verifiable media. He holds a master’s degree from ETH Zurich and has worked on high-integrity security and trust systems at Thales and nCipher Security. Manny also invented the leading anonymous whistleblowing system used by major news organizations like The Guardian. 🔗 Spotify: tinyurl.com/msrecdcy 🔗 Apple Podcasts: tinyurl.com/yz7evd7a 🔗 Amazon Music: tinyurl.com/49rsz6um 🔗 YouTube: tinyurl.com/nhbku34j ⏳ Timestamps: (2:27) Who is Dr Manny Ahmed? People don’t trust what they see online anymore. Not because we got worse at spotting fakes, but because synthetic media has gotten better than the systems we use to detect and/or verify it. The internet was not built to prove origin.

How do you know if a photo or video is real?

How it works in 4 steps: 1. Content is captured on a real device 2. Context and metadata are cryptographically sealed 3. A proof record is generated and stored independently 4. Anyone can verify — without exposing the media

X is already the world’s real time news layer. Deepfakes are erasing trust online and we are rapidly approaching a world where nothing posted can be believed. @OpenOrigins tackles this by stamping photos and videos at the moment they are captured, proving their origin and authenticity using cryptographic traceability. The technology was developed out of research at @Cambridge_Uni. If this verification technology were built directly into the X app, every post could carry verifiable origin recorded on a decentralised chain. Anyone could independently check where content came from. This technology is already being used in major newsrooms to protect authentic media from deepfake manipulation. ITN, the producer behind @itvnews News and @Channel4News, is using OpenOrigins to protect its archive from deepfake manipulation. The system is designed more like Bitcoin than a traditional company product. It runs as a decentralised protocol with multiple nodes, meaning the verification layer would survive even if the company disappeared. @ElonMusk - if trust in online media is collapsing, why not solve it at the protocol level? Thanks to Dr Manny Ahmed for joining @RoxomTV and discussing how this problem can be solved. @hu_manny_ty @freddienew

Here's a nice Valentine's Day statistic - according to an FBI report cited in this article, Americans lost a staggering $672 million in romantic scams in 2024. AI-produced deepfakes are reportedly driving this number up fast. The article goes on to list the standard precautions for spotting deepfakes, but when a coin flip is basically twice as accurate at spotting deepfakes as a human, well... good luck. Another great use case for the trust lane and cryptographically authenticated proof of origin. From @WLWT wcvb.com/article/ai-romance-…
