FGM/C affects more than 230 million women and girls globally, causing chronic pain, infections, complications in childbirth, and psychological trauma. At the World Health Summit, we highlighted the urgent need to treat FGM/C as a global health emergency, not a niche cultural issue. Medicalisation continues to give legitimacy to this harmful practice, even as new data reveals its devastating toll on health systems and survivors. The health sector must respond with urgency, leadership, and investment. #WHS2025 #FGMC #EndFGMC

FGM affects 230M women & girls globally , leaving lifelong physical & emotional scars. At #WHS2025 in Berlin, we joined global health leaders to call for urgent, coordinated action to treat FGM as a global health emergency. Our message was clear: ➡️ FGM is not a medical procedure — it’s violence. ➡️ Health systems must lead with urgency & survivor-centred care. ➡️ Prevention & support are not optional — they’re essential. Ending FGM is not just a human rights imperative — it’s a global health responsibility. #EndFGM #StopMedicalisationOfFGM #TheGirlGen #InvestToPrevent @OptionsinHealth @LeylaHussein

A one-month-old girl in The Gambia has died after being subjected to FGM. This is not culture or tradition — it is violence and a grave violation of human rights. FGM kills an estimated 44,320 girls and young women every year — one every 12 minutes. In The Gambia, prevalence remains at 75–76%, with infants increasingly targeted to evade detection. We demand justice for this child, full enforcement of the FGM ban, and global accountability for states failing to protect girls. Silence makes more deaths inevitable. Action cannot wait! #EndFGM #EndGBV #JusticeForGirls #FGMIsViolence #HumanRights #TheGirlGen

2/3 This incident underscores FGM/C as a silent epidemic, claiming the life of 1 girl every 12 minutes in high-prevalence countries in Africa... Despite FGM/C being outlawed in The Gambia, 72.6% of women and girls have undergone FGM/C.

3/3 This case highlights the need to uphold the ban on FGM/C and strengthen its enforcement, especially in light of recent efforts to overturn the law. We stand in solidarity with those in The Gambia fighting for an end to FGM/C...

💬 Words carry power! At our side event during the 45th @acerwc session, @TheGirlGen shared insights from our Power of Language paper. How we speak about FGM—tone, wording, connotation—can spotlight or silence survivors. We’re calling for a shift: 🔹 Centre girls & survivors 🔹 Reflect FGM’s realities 🔹Promotes, justice, healing and action. As a learning programme, TGG grounds its work in evidence—understanding what drives real change, and where we could do more. This paper is part of that ongoing journey. 📄 Read the Power of Langauge Paper: EN: bit.ly/3TSHAb9 FR: bit.ly/3xL9bN1 #EndFGM #LanguageMatters #PowerOfLanguage #TheGirlGen #MyPowerMyVoice2Lead #ACERWC45

On day 3 of the #26thCSOForum in Lesotho 🇱🇸 @TheGirlGen had the opportunity to speak on the transformative power of language in the work to end FGM. The session opened with a thoughtful safeguarding statement from Brenda Dora of @OrchidProject acknowledging that these conversations can be triggering, and placing wellbeing at the centre. We then shared our renewed, bold position: 👉🏾 FGM is violence. It is abuse. It is a human rights violation rooted in inequality. From our Power of Language position paper, we shared key recommendations for CSOs, governments, and media—urging all to adopt language that centres survivors, recognises harm, and promotes justice and reparations. ➡You can access The Power of Langauge in English & French on our website: English - thegirlgeneration.org/wp-con… French - thegirlgeneration.org/wp-con… #EndFGM #JusticeAndReparations #SurvivorCentered #PowerOfLanguage #TheGirlGen #26thCSOForum
