I would do so knowing, hoping, that everyone would be so shocked and disgusted that it would bring about change. This is shocking: the House Rules Committee just blocked a vote on stripping the Save Our Bacon Act from the farm bill. The SOB Act, buried deep in the farm bill, would wipe out state bans on pork from crated pigs, condemning millions to a lifetime in gestation crates. We were getting very close to having the votes to pass Rep. Luna’s bipartisan amendment to strip the SOB Act from the bill on the floor of the House. Then pork industry lobbyists got to work. Behind closed doors, they got Rules Committee leadership to stop a vote entirely and protect the SOB Act from the scrutiny it can’t survive. The only option now is to kill the whole rotten farm bill. Tennessee is considering a bill (SB1868/HB2526) that would lock up foster kids indefinitely, even if they haven’t been charged with a crime. You can help kill this bill today. Here's what happens when kids are locked up without a crime: Hillary Transue was a teen in Pennsylvania. She made a MySpace page mocking her high school’s strict vice principal. At the end she wrote, "When you find this I hope you have a sense of humor." He didn’t. Instead of detention or a meeting with parents, Hillary was taken to juvenile court before Judge Mark Ciavarella. Her hearing lasted about 60 seconds. She was handcuffed right there and locked up. Her mother was horrified as Hillary who had never been in serious trouble, was treated like a dangerous criminal. Years later it was revealed Ciavarella was taking millions in kickbacks from private detention centers to lock up thousands of kids in the now-infamous Kids for Cash scandal. Fortunately for Hillary, she had a loving family and "only" spent about a month locked up. SB1868/HB2526 would allow Tennessee to detain foster kids, potentially until they are adults, without a charge even being filed, based on predictions about their behavior.
