switching can add to the problems people have. When not done properly, it can easily cause withdrawal and other new problems. Research to investigate this is sorely lacking
How med switches can lead to stigma
We’re often told psychiatric treatment is about “finding the right one for you.” But what’s rarely mentioned is that being repeatedly switched can itself be stigmatising.
Each change adds to a record that future clinicians may read as evidence of “treatment resistance” or a “difficult patient.” Over time, this can create the false impression that someone is chronically ill, when in reality they’ve simply been destabilised by constant medication changes or given drugs that never worked in the first place.
Patients are too often labelled as problems when what really happened was medical mismanagement.
How many people are warned about this before taking that first prescription?
