Charles Grodin (born on this day) absolutely wrecked De Niro in Midnight Run. At one point, he needles him so relentlessly that De Niro cracks, breaks for a split-second, looks right at camera, and mutters: “pain in the ass this guy is.”
Grodin waits a beat… then hits him again.

Simmons’ rant against greta t, his ‘Muslims are the bad guys’ nonsense in Olympos, raging xenophobia in Flashback. He was a dick in his later years, wrote bad sex a lot, but his skills with sf wonder, big ideas, elemental horror were always present.

Simmons became troublesome to like over the last few years and much of his later writing is tainted (and some his earlier stuff too tbh) but Hyperion was a core read for me and his short fiction (particularly The Great Lover) was an inspiration. Fires of Eden, Crook Factory too.
