#TKAwards | Congratulations to our first runner-up @PLMyburgh of @dailymaverick for the IDT / Tebogo Malaka Series, an investigation which culminated in an explosive video sting showing a top government official attempting to bribe this journalist in order to bury the story.
And here is the big reveal: Tonight, as part of NinetyOne's 35th anniversary. Founder and CEO just Hendrik Du Toit has just announced a R1 million prize for a a South African investigative journalist who does work that serves democracy. I'm honoured that this great Hendrik has asked me to serve as one of the judges.
R11.3-million in cash. 706 individual ATM deposits. A trail that leads straight to the doorsteps of former Eskom CEO Brian Molefe.
In a new investigation, we’ve mapped the physical location of deposits into a State Capture-era ‘slush fund’. @PLMyburghdailymaverick.co.za/article/…
Today I witnessed something that broke my heart.
A call centre advertised posts in Woodmead.
Thousands of young people arrived.
Among them were my two daughters.
One has an LLB degree.
The other is a qualified graphic designer.
Both graduates.
Both standing in a queue for a call-centre job.
That is the reality of South Africa in 2026.
This is not laziness.
This is not lack of skills.
This is not young people refusing to work.
This is an economy that has collapsed for the working class.
We have seen this pain before.
In Johannesburg, a young woman died in a stampede simply trying to apply for Metro Police posts.
In Cape Town, thousands slept outside a stadium overnight just to submit job applications.
Today it’s call centres.
Tomorrow it will be something else.
Meanwhile ministers sit comfortably and tell young people that they are basking in the sun, totally out of touch with the desperation in our homes.
Our children are qualified.
Our children are willing.
Our children are trying.
But there are no jobs.
South Africa cannot survive like this.
We need:
• public investment
• factories
• infrastructure
• decent work
• an end to austerity
Not empty speeches.
The youth are not failing.
The system is failing them.
