There should be no calamity, even of the greatest severity, that should cause the Canadian flag to be lowered to half-mast on Canada Day.

You might want to draw on VDH’s nuance the next time you have to listen to a high school poli-sci student yap about the Thucydides Trap.

Some kind of curse has been put on the Tupper Society: twice this month we have bought books with two or three sentences randomly underlined in pen.

Father’s Day gift books have a delightful way of ending up in our own library.

A Canadian of a certain age will appreciate this, if not for Richler himself, then for the reminder of names from a bygone literary Canada. The gossipy world of writers and artists seems largely to have disappeared, perhaps replaced by the solipsism of social media.

We prefer to read our French theory in cemeteries, and this one seems particularly apt for that purpose. We’ll keep it in the TupperWagon library.

The favourite of my myriad copies of #Ulysses. Together with a keyring presented to me by a pal, who sourced coins of significance to fuel my Joyce obsession. A 1904 Penny to mark the year in the book, and a 1922 French Franc to mark the year of publication. #Bloomsday.

For my @EngelsbergIdeas debut I review a collection about William Lyon Mackenzie King, warlord, premier, pervert.
A new collection of essays revisits the life of a séance-holding Presbyterian bachelor whom historians routinely rank as Canada's greatest prime minister, yet one largely ignored by his countrymen. Who really was Mackenzie King, the maker of modern Canada? | Yuan Yi Zhu (@yuanyi_z) engelsbergideas.com/reviews/…

Free torch, to any journalist willing to carry it…details here.
Canada’s media capture should be a scandal in journalism schools. Instead, too many scholars have spent decades rationalizing a consolidation that handed our news media to hedge funds, private equity firms, and telecom monopolies, argues @marcedge1. canadiandimension.com/articl…

Every time we came across this in a thrift store we weren’t in the mood to buy it. Eventually we found a reason to want it, and it didn’t take long to see it again. And in HC, no less.

Somehow we are aware of which cities are vying for the Stanley Cup. We need to be more vigilant now that some sort of soccer game is going on. If our contemporaries will not trouble themselves to know who won the 1973 Tour de France, we can’t care about ball and puck games.
