I was there. Very young I shall never forget the violence of the coppers, and I was there when Malik Oussekine was killed in Paris (1986) and saw first hand in that decade the Spanish police in San Sebastián kill a person with rubber bullets during a protest in that decade.
On this day in 1974, anti-fascist Kevin Gately was killed by police at an anti-National Front demonstration in London, which became known as the Battle of Red Lion Square. Read more here: searchlightmagazine.com/2025… @uaf @AntiRacismDay

The Court of Appeals has decided that the proscription of Palestine Action was lawful. This decision must be strongly condemned by all those who believe in protecting our civil liberties. We will not stop speaking out against genocide.

I was there. For years we used to chant, 'Police protected fascists, Kevin Gately died."

Parliament should reverse the decision to proscribe Palestine Action urgently before we see large numbers of elderly people in particular being dragged before our courts. Classifying protest through direct action as terrorism brings Parliament & our judicial system into disrepute

Sad news. I first met Roy Hattersley when he was Prices & Consumer Policy Minister. From the Croslandite Labour Right tradition, Hattersley later worked with many us on the Left during the Blair New Labour years, saying that it was the party that had moved right, not him. bbc.co.uk/news/articles/cvgq…

I attended the Grenfell Silent Walk again this evening. I attended the first & after 9 years it’s totally unacceptable that justice has not been secured. One vital step could be the passing of the Hillsborough law, which contains the duty of candour to secure truth & justice.
9 years on from Grenfell with no Justice and too little change. We remember our 72 loved ones today and everyday 💚

Politics is a funny old business. Here’s the Daily Mail condemning a party for being racist in support of its preferred racist party.

Roy Hattersley was a titan in the Labour Party compared to today's minows. Despite being a Labour right-winger, he was principled, idealist & engaged with ideas writing thoughtfully on democratic socialism. The sort of person who would not be tolerated in Starmer's Labour.

Roy Hattersley was a giant of the Labour movement. Through decades of service, including as deputy leader and a minister, he never lost his belief in a more equal Britain. My thoughts are with his wife Maggie and his family.
