You had to be 17 in the winter of 2011 to understand Rockstar. Not cz it was the greatest film ever made, but because it arrived at a very specific moment in our lives.
There were hardly any smartphones, no Spotify, & YouTube was mostly on the desktop. We didn't consume music the way we do now we lived with it. That album became part of growing up for many 90s kids.
You listened to it while getting ready for school or college, through wired earphones tucked beneath your shirt on crowded buses, or while walking between tuitions on cold November and December evenings. You experienced it in theatres with friends you may not have seen since.
What people love isn't just the film it's the associative memories attached to it. For many, it coincided with a first crush, first love, or first relationship. It became a time capsule.
So when someone born in 2004 asks, What's the hype about Rockstar? I get it. You're watching a movie... many of us are remembering a version of ourselves that no longer exists.
why do people like Rockstar? I never understood the hype. I genuinely want to know what stuck out in that film apart from the music.
