🗿 It's that time of year when social media feeds fill with maps and stories about one of the most curious islands in the world: Easter Island, or
#RapaNui in the local language.
We know that the island was named by Dutch explorer Jakob Roggeveen in honor of the day he sighted it, Easter Sunday 1722. We know that it belongs politically to Chile, and that its most distinctive feature is the Moai heads that make it a unique destination.
Here I show my map of Rapa Nui football with all the teams that participate and have participated in the recent past.
But how much do we know about football on Easter Island?
Here are some fun facts:
🗿 As Chileans see it, it's the most popular sport locally. In 2009, the local team played the opening match of the Copa de Chile against the historic and multiple champion team from Santiago, Colo-Colo, losing 4-0 at the Hanga Roa football complex.
🗿 There is a very active championship, organized by Fútbol Rapanui, divided into Apertura and Clausura like many other leagues in South America. Each year, 8-10 teams meet, with some historic teams like Fc Moeroa and Hanga Roa FC competing for the "Superclasico de Rapa Nui."
🗿 The Rapa Nui team is currently part of
@CONIFAOfficial América Latina and has participated in the indigenous football tournaments of South America, the Campeonato Nacional de Fútbol de Pueblos Originarios, winning the 2012 edition.
