As more schools and states consider going phone-free, I'm reposting this: clear evidence that phone-free schools improve learning. Just taking phones during CLASS gives less benefit in class, while still damaging social life between classes and at lunch.
Major new survey from National Education Association gives very strong support for phone-free schools. Any policy that lets kids have phones BETWEEN classes disrupts what happens IN class. Give teachers a chance. Go phone-free. nea.org/resource-library/imp…

Question practice proven to be effective for younger children as well.
Most studies on test-enhanced learning involve college students, so teachers rightly ask whether it works for younger students. This study of Brazilian 3rd graders suggests that it does: bit.ly/49YqqLe ($). Also, testing reduced the correlation of achievement with IQ.

ChatGPT is 2 years old and it has transformed learning. True learners still read, listen and apply, but content can now be summarised, the teacher may no longer be the expert , assessments require new skills and personalised learning is within reach. pedley-smith.uk/2024/11/26/t…

Contrary to popular belief our attention spans haven't shrunk below that of a goldfish. The average person can maintain focus for 20-30 minutes, not the rumoured 8 seconds. What's changed are the levels of distraction we face daily. My latest blog pedley-smith.uk/2024/10/29/a…

South #Korea to introduce #AI -powered textbooks in schools next March. Their ambition is laudable - personalised learning, data-driven outcomes, and global AI leadership. But tech alone won’t fix a flawed #education system. #EdTech koreaherald.com/view.php?ud=…

Excellent article by @PsyDocCindy from @AceThatTest. It explains how teaching methods should change depending on prior knowledge - a novice (use Direct instruction) Intermediate (offer examples) and for Experts (give them problem based exercises). learningscientists.org/blog/…

Why do people watch football live when it would be more convenient to watch it at home on a widescreen TV. The answer is atmosphere, being in that #environment changes what you see, hear, feel, and remember. My latest blog... pedley-smith.uk/2024/09/29/t…

There is an excellent concussion to this research. They quote the American writer William Feather. “An education isn't how much you have committed to memory, or even how much you know. It's being able to differentiate between what you know and what you do not”
People with more content knowledge are less likely to claim to have knowledge they actually lack. sciencedirect.com/science/ar…

Just about to start my last #lecture for @KaplanUK. After 30 years I should be ok, confident yes, but who knows how it will go. Can I explain the content well enough, can I maintain levels of #attention, can I #motivate and will they remember it tomorrow? Wish me luck....

Structured pedagogy includes textbooks, lesson plans and teacher training.
Two interventions—structured pedagogy and achievement-based rather than age-based student grouping—could increase learning for 400 million children in low-/lower-middle-income countries by around 120% at a cost of $18 per child: bit.ly/3Xs5pDR

Thanks for sharing @C_Hendrick. One other observation - in the study they stated that 77.96% of students reported to not have been taught how to study. That’s far too high….
Really important new study: what learning strategies do successful students use? Key points: ▶️ Techniques backed by cognitive research, like elaborative study and retrieval practice, are positively correlated with student achievement. ▶️ Despite the effectiveness of techniques like retrieval practice, they are among the least used. Rote learning remains common, possibly due to its effectiveness for short-term success in examinations. ▶️ Higher use of effective study strategies correlates with positive beliefs, such as self-efficacy and growth mindset.
