If any US warship were to suffer damage in the Mediterranean or the Indian Ocean, the nearest repair points would be its European bases, the most important being the Rota Naval Base.
If they leave these bases, to repair their ships, they would have to cross the entire Indian and Pacific Oceans or the entire Mediterranean plus the Atlantic.
