The IgA response to microbiota in IBD-patients may uncover disease-modifying microorganisms and reveal improved biomarkers of disease progression, concludes @marceldezoete at @UMCUtrecht in a study by Dutch and American investigators in @CellHostMicrobebit.ly/2NHxbv9
Our manuscript on the dissemination of E. faecium vanA resistance in Dutch hospitals is now published in Genome Medicine! genomemedicine.biomedcentral… Interested in clonal vs plasmid/transposon dissemination? Check our work!
Thanks to @AnitaSchurch for leading this project
UCyTOF.nl launch: Want to apply mass cytometry to your research project? Learn all about it in next week's kick-off seminar in collaboration with Fluidigm (Jan 21, 11:00 CET). @fluidigm @UMCU_CMM @UMCU_Intl@cancercenterumc#cytof
and @wvschaik and me had the opportunity to write a perspective on this.
The takeaway message? Be cautious in the use of colistin, for resistance can arise relatively easily.

Cool and important paper out from Malmstrom labs (Lund University) where they elucidated the structural details of StrepA M1 interaction with human IgG. Important for rational M-based vaccine design

Finally we tried to look at the plasmidome using
@Sergi_Arredondo MLPlasmids - we found signal of a diverse plasmidome even in isolates which are closely related at the core genome level. Replicons appeared to be largely genus restricted, though there was some overlap...
Really nice to have this paper out and highlighted by @ASMicrobiology!
Want to know about the evolution and impact of colistin resistance in Klebsiella? Read on 👇!
K. pneumoniae strains can develop colistin resistance through many evolutionary trajectories once exposed to colistin. This includes single nucleotide polymorphisms, insertions and deletions, and the integration of insertion sequence elements. #AACJournalskyw.io/ChbiOn

Please join me in congratulating Suzan Rooijakkers, professor of microbiology @UMCUtrecht, who received today a € 2M Consolidator Grant from @ERC_Research to identify antibodies that use the immune system to fight E. coli infections bit.ly/3m5a88x@MarcBonten#ERCCoG
Inhibiting the immune system can impede cancer treatment, how is still largely unclear. In a perspective for @NatRevImmunol @LindeMeyaard introduces a framework to classify different immune receptors which control the response: nature.com/articles/s41577-0…@UMCUtrecht@YaleMed
Lock down did not just bring down COVID cases but also invasive bacterial infections such as pneumococcal and meningococcal disease around the globe. Beautiful collaboration of the IRIS consortium now in writing on MedRxiv: medrxiv.org/content/10.1101/…
How every PhD students feels in the last months before submission [source; from Dutch television (Nieuwsuur)]
- I don't enjoy writing but to have written.
- I feel amazing once I'm done.
- The process itself is torture.
