An inconsistent triad. 1. It is bad to give a philosophy exam asking questions like "Is there free will?," "Is the soul immaterial?," "Is anything supernatural?" 2. Saying metaphysics matters to providence is like God giving a bad philosophy exam. 3. God is a good philosopher.

I'm not a huge basketball fan but I have always liked the Knicks, and I remember 1973, and what a great team that was. It has been a long time! Congratulations Knicks!!!

"The difference between logical and metaphysical necessities lies, not in the ranges of possibilities throughout which they hold, but ... in the kind of vocabulary essential to their expression, and ... in the kinds of entities essentially involved in explaining them." - Bob Hale

Trump is an absolute disaster. And no neither Biden nor Obama were this bad. He needs to go.

I might be influenced by Hume but in many ways I am hyper-rationalist. Any truth philosophy has to offer is epistemological, when it is best it is a product of pure a priori reasoning. But like Hume I think what this leaves beyond nominal and relational claims is scant.

Kalam starts out with an a priori premise. Then a theory that is accepted by some but not all scientists is assumed to be true. Once you have the a priori claim, the rest is redundant since you can prove the Universe is self-existing. You use science to prevent pantheism! Ha!

Parody of the Kalam Cosmological Argument 1. Everything but God needs a cause in order to exist. 2. Ergo, God exists.

The only way to get a powerful person in trouble in the US is to get them to lie under deposition. This whole Epstein saga is going to be dragged out until enough big names tell enough lies under oath. That is what it takes now to punish men for the sexual assault of children.

I like being a little sloppy while doing philosophy. I know it drives some people nuts, and I'm a bit ashamed that part of the reason I like being sloppy while doing philosophy is because it drives some people nuts.

It is amazing the number of people who believe: 1/ God is incomprehensible. 2/ That incomprehensible concept is not the concept of God. How can you possibly get from 1 to 2?

"The Determination of the Will, supposes an effect, which must have a cause. ... If it be so, the Will is both Determiner and determined; it is a cause that acts and produces effects upon itself, and is the object of its own influence and action." - Jonathan Edwards, 1754, 1.2

Great example of absolute vs. conditional necessity if I do say so myself!
Replying to @_DHDS
Consider: If you are my mother, then necessarily we share genetic material. Formally we say: Nec (M -> G) But we don't necessarily share genetic material. Nec G. Sharing genes (G) is conditional on you being my mother (M) or otherwise related.

The Arminians-Calvinists (at least Edwards) debate has parallels with the Luther-Erasmus debate with an important difference. They are debates about robust (Arminian, Luther) vs. modest (Edwards, Erasmus) views of freedom. But the necessitarian/libertarian debate doesn't aline.

Which premise in this argument for compatibilism would you deny? 1. Anything that is not impossible can be actualized by God. 2. Ergo, God can create a coy libertarian, someone with the ability to do otherwise yet who always follows his strongest motive.
