Perfect analogy for what happens when we do too much for our students. Goal is to develop independent problem solvers who can generalize and apply what they know to what they don't know!

Birds are fed by their parents in their infancy. When the time comes to feed themselves, there can be some confusion when the food does not go into their mouth by itself.

I love the creative ways 1st graders are solving 2-digit addition/subtraction problems with regrouping on i-ready testing this year. All because of the great place value foundation from @IllustrateMath. They usually just guess on these 2nd grade questions. @MsCastillosMath

A7: One of my biggest take aways is that you can do a lot more damage to a student's math learning when you step in too early with help and strategies...sometimes the best thing to do as a teacher is to stay quiet. #SPSMathChat

A6: Would love to explore productive struggle more. #SPSMathChat

A5: Many heads are better than one. Every time I work collaboratively with a team I learn as an educator. It’s great seeing things from all different perspectives. #SPSMathChat

A4: Manipulatives are a must when exploring and making meaning. I feel hands on tools are often taken away too fast before students have made their own meaning. Drawings are also very important. If you can’t create a model for a problem you don’t fully understand it. #SPSMathChat

A3: Understanding progressions allows us to make smart decisions when thinking of purposeful questions that keep students moving forward in their learning, it allows us to provide just the right amount of scaffold to promote productive struggle, #SPSMathChat

A2: All students are engaged in meaningful tasks making sense of the math in their own way and sharing their thoughts with others. #SPSMathChat
