Fourth, other age checks cited like bank checks and email surveillance are literally insane 🤷‍♀️ Far from “reining in Big Tech”, this is a gift to them - a huge transfer of power and data from the public to the tech companies, wrapped in child safety branding.

Third, why on EARTH would anyone who cares about child safety tell kids to frequently send photos of themselves / switch on webcams, just to browse openly? Safety is about behaviour. This is risky behaviour. We need to train children to refuse intrusive personal data demands.

Wasn't Youtube a great way for poorer children to close the gap on those whose parents paid for tutoring. Did Starmer think about any of this?

Our leaders are not smart at all (but when have they ever been). Where’s the robust plans to strengthen youth third and outdoor spaces, where’s the conversation about third party data and monopoly they have on sensitive information. This is a recipe for disaster. No plan or infrastructure, just posturing and performance.

Children have utterly let down to date. But what does a ‘social media ban’ actually mean? Is this really age verification for all? And what does that entail? Because on the surface this looks like rushed populist techsolutionism that will hand *more* power to the platforms. 1/

that’s the question isn’t it. what WILL she do? there are no youth clubs for her to attend. food, cinema tickets, any sort of third space activity is all too expensive. their parents are underpaid, saturday jobs don’t exist any more, children have truly been abandoned by the govt

I have been contacted by many constituents about the harm caused to children by social media - from viewing inappropriate content and the risk of grooming, to bullying and the impact on mental health. I share these concerns, but I worry that a blanket social media ban for under-16s isn’t the answer. Firstly, it’s unlikely to work. Young people will either find ways to access these sites, or they will be pushed to even less regulated and darker corners of the internet. But fundamentally, a ban like this lets Big Tech off the hook for creating and profiting from these harms. What young people, and all of us, need is safety by design. Experts have spent years calling for algorithmic accountability and default protections to be built into these platforms, alongside stronger regulation.

it is a fundamental failure of society for one man to be able to amass such sickening levels of wealth as 673 million people across the world go hungry every single day.

A response of “chill, relax” when asked about a World Cup host nation vindictively wielding visa restrictions against players, journalists, and fans is perhaps the perfect encapsulation of Infantino — always trying pitifully to look cool when what’s needed is actual leadership.
"Chill, relax" BBC sports editor Dan Roan asks Fifa president Gianni Infantino if he's lost control of his own tournament. #FifaWorldCup

So @FIFAcom’s position is that a referee they selected for the World Cup can be excluded because of one host country’s racism, and FIFA bears no responsibility whatsoever. Then why wasn’t he assigned to Canada or Mexico? The tournament has three host countries. The obstacle is one country, not the entire World Cup. So why isn't FIFA finding a solution? What FIFA is really saying is that when officials from the Global South are discriminated against, accommodation is impossible and exclusion is acceptable. A World Cup that only works for holders of the right passports is not a global tournament. It’s a privilege masquerading as one.
#BREAKING: FIFA Clarifies Its Official Position on the Case of Somali Referee Omar Abdulkadir Artan @FIFAcom has confirmed that it does not interfere in immigration or visa procedures, as these matters fall under the authority of the host country. The world football governing body explained that, as in previous tournaments, the host government has the final authority to decide who is granted a visa and allowed entry into the country. This means the decision regarding Omar Artan's entry into the United States rests with U.S. authorities, not FIFA. This is deeply disappointing.
