I just found out about Rob Reiner and his wife Michelle. I can't possibly find the right words to say what's in my heart but ... I'll give you the words I can find. I disagreed with Rob in every aspect of politics. Every single one And that didn't affect the love and joy I have for his work. His movies helped shape my childhood. They helped shape ME. If not for the Princess Bride I'd be lacking so many foundational core memories I'd be a totally different person today. If not for a few good men, stand by me, and so many others - including his turn in front of the camera as meathead - my love of motion pictures on and off the big screen wouldn't be what it is today. And if that love weren't what it is, I'd never have arrived where I am today as a writer who's finally found her story and dedicated herself to bringing it to life. And to find out it was probably his own son who did it... It's so devastating. Truly devastating. Politics aside or not, no man who can tell a story like the ones he did could've possibly been on the level of evil parental figures that even I, in all my morally grey glory, could understand why his kid might do such a thing. And for reference, I believe the Menendez brothers were potentially justified enough to warrant a new trial with all their evidence admissable in court... So I'm not just gassing about "oh this should never happen." Sometimes it happens and it SHOULD in a just world. When I say I mean it, believe me, I do mean it - this should never have happened to Rob Reiner. This was senseless. It was an attack on far more than an elderly couple. It was an attack on a figure who's work underpinned the modern age in ways so vast and so small that we can't even quantify them. May he and his wife rest in peace. And may their killer be brought to swift justice.
