A holidaymaker accused of grabbing a pasty-stealing seagull out of the air and beating it to death in front of shocked families and children in St Ives has been identified locally as Jonathan “Jonny” Roberts from Bradford. Devon and Cornwall Police have confirmed they are investigating the alleged incident, which witnesses say took place on the seafront on Wednesday. What makes the story even more remarkable is that Roberts has reportedly spent years condemning animal cruelty online. His X account, “JonnyUtd”, contained numerous posts attacking those who mistreat animals, with one post even praising the idea of wanting to “kill” people who abuse innocent animals. Yet witnesses allege that after a seagull stole food from him, he grabbed the bird, repeatedly punched it in the chest, and left it with devastating injuries in full view of members of the public, including young children. Rosie Reynolds, who witnessed the incident, said the gull was struck several times before going limp and being thrown to the ground. Other witnesses described being horrified by what they saw, while locals confronted the man at the scene. A takeaway owner who served Roberts shortly beforehand said the man’s wife appeared shocked by the incident and that the reaction of local residents had been one of disbelief and anger. The account linked to Roberts has also attracted controversy for posts relating to Israel, Zionism and Hezbollah, with campaign group Gnasher Jew accusing it of antisemitic content and support for terrorist organisations. Herring gulls are protected under the Wildlife and Countryside Act. Anyone convicted of unlawfully harming one can face an unlimited fine and up to six months in prison. If the allegations are true, many will see this as a striking example of someone publicly condemning cruelty while being accused of carrying out an act of cruelty themselves. Trial delayed as mom pleads guilty and flips on co-defendants In Bibb County, Alabama, eight suspects ran a sex trafficking ring out of an underground bunker where children as young as 3 were drugged, bound, and raped with adults paying to abuse them. Animals were also targeted. Rebecca Brewer and mother of some of the victims, pleaded guilty to sexual torture and nine counts of first-degree kidnapping. As part of the deal she agreed to testify against the other seven defendants. The trial for the remaining suspects has been delayed while the case expands, including a federal investigation into at least one of them.
