The first Starships to Mars will launch in 2 years when the next Earth-Mars transfer window opens. These will be uncrewed to test the reliability of landing intact on Mars. If those landings go well, then the first crewed flights to Mars will be in 4 years. Flight rate will grow exponentially from there, with the goal of building a self-sustaining city in about 20 years. Being multiplanetary will vastly increase the probable lifespan of consciousness, as we will no longer have all our eggs, literally and metabolically, on one planet.

SpaceX created the first fully reusable rocket stage and, much more importantly, made the reuse economically viable. Making life multiplanetary is fundamentally a cost per ton to Mars problem. It currently costs about a billion dollars per ton of useful payload to the surface of Mars. That needs to be improved to $100k/ton to build a self-sustaining city there, so the technology needs to be 10,000 times better. Extremely difficult, but not impossible.

We predicted it! 🚀 Cost of autonomous robotaxis reflect 7 year old RethinkX prediction—now 1/3rd the price of an Uber! 🚕 In our 2017 Rethinking Transportation report we predicted the rise of autonomous electric vehicles and and a brand new business model: on-demand, autonomous electric vehicles owned by fleets, not individuals that we call 'Transport-as-a-Service'. 🧠We predicted that the cost per mile of the Transport-as-a-Service disruption would be 16 cents/mile (falling to 10 cents/mile) (box 2, page 17). This prediction has come true! 🚕 Baidu has set up an autonomous driverless taxi service in Wuhan, China..."without a driver and able to operate 24/7, [Baidu autonomous vehicles] costs only 1/3rd of the price of a taxi or Uber." 💸"The cost paid by users is between RMB0.5 to RMB1.0 per km ($0.07 to $0.14)" 🚀When you translate our 2017 prediction into kilometers, we correctly predicted that TaaS would start at $0.10 per Km, exactly in the middle of the Baidu range of ($0.07 to $0.14/Km), eventually falling to 6.21 cents/Km, which is slightly below the Baidu range today.
