It's often said that the stock market is not the economy. But the two seem particularly far apart lately. - S&P 500 up ~12% year to date - Nasdaq up 15% - AI stocks surging: Nvidia ( 28%), Meta ( 27%) , Microsoft ( 22%), Palantir ( 126%), Oracle ( 80%) BUT: - Consumer sentiment is down - jobless claims (layoffs) at highest level since 2021 - inflation at 2.9 percent - Employers added just 22,000 jobs in August It boils down to a mix of AI-fueled speculation and expectations for future rate cuts, according to investment analysts and economists I spoke with (@Claudia_Sahm @DianeSwonk @rwbaird @usbank @DivesTech @Michael_K_Farr): washingtonpost.com/business/…

NEW: SpaceX's plan to do 100 Starship launches a year from Florida's Space Coast has alarmed Elon Musk's rivals. Several rocket companies told the Space Force that bringing the massive rocket to Cape Canaveral will make it all-but-impossible for others to work there, according to "public comments" obtained by the Washington Post. washingtonpost.com/business/…

You know what would have been the right and collegial thing to a fellow journalist? To not copy a story she worked on for THREE years almost line for line and still not even give her credit or link to her story. This includes family tree and PORTRAITS that we commissioned.

Calling all recent and prospective homebuyers: I'm a Washington Post reporter working on a story about the housing market and mortgage rates. If you recently bought a home with hopes of refinancing, lets talk! I'm also looking to connect with people who are still looking.

Ron DeSantis's hand-selected Disney board arrived at their posts to find a surprise: their predecessors used an 11th-hour legal agreement to sharply limit the board's power. They're disallowed from using Disney's "fanciful characters" like Mickey Mouse. washingtonpost.com/nation/20…

Financial analysis is baffling. After the rise in markets yesterday, analysts talked about how investors had been reassured by Powell's comments on future hikes. Then the markets sank today, so analysts are completely reinterpreting the exact same events to now mean the opposite

I wrote about myself and how $88,000 in mainly private student loans has made reporting unaffordable. This piece closes a chapter for me and journalism for a while. And though it's not the way I expected to end my run, I'm grateful for the journey. mlk50.com/2022/06/13/loans-g…

Incredible. 5 yrs ago, I filed a FOIA request w/SOUTHCOM for photographed copies of all artwork created by Guantanamo detainees for a project I've been working on. SOUTHCOM just turned docs over & redacted 100s of paintings citing law enforcement techniques & procedures exemption

How poetic of them
As seen on Weibo: Shanghai residents go to their balconies to sing & protest lack of supplies. A drone appears: “Please comply w covid restrictions. Control your soul’s desire for freedom. Do not open the window or sing.” m.weibo.cn/status/4755028135…
