Unprecedented. Exhilaration. Relief! These are just a few of the words that @nyknicks digital content manager and @princetonalumni McKayla Tyrrell ‘20 used to describe the team’s historic comeback win in Game 4 of the NBA Finals. On a typical home game day, @TyrrellMckayla plays a leadership role in managing the team’s social media channels and context execution. Arriving to @thegarden 4 hours before tipoff, she oversees sponsored content, coordinates with other departments on Celebrity Row recognition, helps edit videos, and more. At away games, she’s the sole social media staffer on the ground, capturing photo and video and oftentimes working until 5am after the game is over. She cut her teeth in Jadwin Gym as a student manager and social media content contributor for @princetonMBB while earning a degree in architecture. Born and raised in Freehold, NJ, with grandparents who grew up in Greenpoint and Hell’s Kitchen, she’s "a Knicks fan by blood." "It’s hard to appreciate the context within sports history when you’re caught up in the moment," she says. "As a social team, we adopt the mentality of the team and the front office: ‘It’s a great win, but we haven't accomplished the goal yet, which is winning a chip.’ So we celebrate it as much as we can, but we never get too high." It's something she's had to practice throughout the playoffs, because when a big moment happens, it’s her responsibility to capture it. For instance, when OG Anunoby tipped in the ball with 1.2 seconds to go on Wednesday night, topping off a 29-point comeback, McKayla’s job was to celebrate with the world via the team’s Twitter/X account: "IT'S GOOD. IT'S GOOD. IT'S GOOD." "While the energy at these games is unlike anything I've ever experienced (my coworkers often make fun of me for getting teary-eyed), I'm not cheering or jumping out of my seat. I'm burying my head in my computer and putting on my noise-cancelling headphones. It's the only way we can get the content out." But, she knows there will be a time to reflect on this moment. "All that said, it's beyond humbling and I'm so grateful to have a small part in it."
