Darfur, Sudan:
NRC is providing relief in North Darfur, but are prevented from reaching Al Fasher.
There, a calculated and long-planned campaign of destruction is taking place. The city has been under siege and bombardment for more than 500 days, but now the violent chaos has deteriorated dramatically.
Vulnerable civilians tell us about house-to-house raids and of people hiding in holes buried underground to survive, as entire families are being killed.
These assaults against civilians and humanitarians in and around Al Fasher must immediately end.
Reports of deliberate and widespread attacks on populated areas - including killings and summary executions – and the specific targeting of local humanitarian responders.
Many local volunteers, who have provided lifesaving aid in appalling conditions, are now in extreme danger.
In Tawila – 60kms from Al Fasher – people are arriving exhausted, starved, traumatised, injured. Many arriving having lost family members en route.
🟠NRC teams continue to respond in Tawila🟠
The town is an open-air camp which was already at its breaking point, with a widespread cholera outbreak, families surviving on scraps, sleeping in the dirt under shelters made out of straw, with barely any access to clean water and toilets.
🟠NRC is running day and nights shift to register those newly arriving
🟠With our support, local responders are running 10 community kitchens that provide a meal (often the first meal in days) for those arriving
🟠We are also working to provide temporary housing, planning for cash distribution, and in coming days will also begin psychosocial support activities for children
The situation in and around Al Fasher demands immediate international attention.
This crisis can be halted, but only with decisive, united action:
