The simple explanation is that its fanbase loves it. It might be a film that ends up doing better than expectations through word-of-mouth (this is what happened with Sinners) as opposed to the "splashy inescapable marketing" that is often associated with franchise films.

Marjane Satrapi, author of the acclaimed animated movie Persepolis and the graphic anthology Women, Life, Freedom has died. May her memory be a blessing. Through her singular artistic vision, she exposed the realities of the Islamic Republic to an international audience and gave voice to the aspirations of Iranian women and all those striving for liberty against the repression and intolerance of the Mullahs. In her memory, and in solidarity with the people of Iran, we will not be bystanders, but will continue to advocate for an Iranian society where all its citizens can live freely.

A guy graduates college in 1980. Takes a job at 23. Buys a house for 3X his salary. Puts a little into his 401(k). Gets a pension on top of it. Retires at 62 with a paid-off home and guaranteed income for life. Same guy graduates in 2015. The house now costs 7X his salary. No pension. The 401(k) is the entire plan. He didn't make worse choices. He got a worse deal.

Regarding Traci Parks victory last night. She knew block by block the contours of her district like no other Councilmember I have met, the number of block captains, neighborhood watch leaders, neighborhood council members, local civic leaders that just freely text her and her back at them is a case study for everyone in City Hall on having the pulse of your neighborhood down. She’s effective because residents know she will actually be their advocate and if she can’t do something she just tells them the truth like adults and they respect that, there is no bullshit with Traci Park.

The music business will stay in this “nobody’s making money on albums so you gotta tour non stop if you want to survive” until artists wake up to how they are stealing all of the revenue from us and pull out of streaming all together. This isn’t a “renegotiate through federal pressure” thing, this is a “this is toxic and it’s killing art” kind of situation.

Movies back then, if bombed on initial release, would get a second life thanks to video stores and cable. People discovered them and saw their value. So much streaming "content", big IPs, and messaging, have made it harder for cult films to emerge.
