@ProfFerguson covers all of the legalities here and many more in his book that released earlier this year. Basically, we're fucked from a legal standpoint right now and it will take effectively a Constitutional Amendment to really ensure our privacy. Assuming cops follow it.

Prof. Huey: when does your book come out?
Replying to @michaelgendron
Yeah, it’s not like there’s any “experts” on police reports and data who’ve researched and written extensively on these issues and are putting out a new book on AI and another on police data. 🤷‍♀️

Michael Smerconish sits down with George Washington University law professor Andrew Guthrie Ferguson, author of "Your Data Will Be Used Against You: Policing in the Age of Self-Surveillance," for a timely conversation about privacy, policing, and the rise of AI-powered surveillance. From license plate readers and facial recognition to Tesla “hurry up mode” and automated school bus tickets, they explore how technology is reshaping law enforcement — and what Americans may be sacrificing in the name of safety. Human in the loop isn't doing what we assume when it comes to AI assisted police reports. New preprint, now up at @CrimRxiv: "A Good College Essay but a Bad Police Report." @axon_enterprise markets Draft One on two primary claims: that the tool saves officers time, and that it produces reports of better quality than officers writing alone. The speed claim was a flat null in our 2024 RCT. This new paper tests the quality claim. crimrxiv.com/pub/u7azgqzd
