Lots of people asking about Scotland's climate targets today (understandably). We won't comment before we see what the Scottish Government is planning, but our position on the 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿2030 target is already very clear. It was in two key bits of advice, published already. 🧵

Surprising!
This is a 1 million tons per year scale CO2 injection well. So 1,000 of those would be sufficient for a gigaton per year, or about the scale of total CO2 storage by 2050 in the Net-Zero America E scenario. That seems less daunting than I had pictured in my mind...

Methane emissions per unit of energy are higher in biogas and biomethane supply chains than they are in oil and gas supply chains. But there is hope if BAT is used! Nice work @smrbkk @Wiccaoflight sciencedirect.com/science/ar…

NEWS FLASH! It’s not a dislike of “hard maths” that puts girls off studying or pursuing careers in maths physics. It’s outdated and damaging stereotypes that close doors on many talented girls and women. Ready to hear about some of our most inspiring women physicists? 🧵

One wonders why it has taken so long for this issue to be really recognised - despite the efforts of many - the UK’s residential energy efficiency farce of the past ~10 years! Where Britain’s journey to insulation went wrong theguardian.com/environment/…

Fantastic to see evidence from @Grantham_IC researcher @_neil_grant referenced in this @CommonsEAC letter on negative emission technologies. @AjayGambhir11 @ProfHawkes #climate 👇
We have published a letter on negative emissions technologies to the @beisgovuk Secretary of State, warning that current Government policy on technologies that suck carbon out of the air could see heavy emitters dodge their responsibilities to cut emissions. Read the letter at:

🚨A thread (and report) on CARBON DIOXIDE REMOVALS🚨 Global focus has (rightly) been on emissions reductions, but this alone will not be enough for 1.5C, we need to start removing carbon from today. See our new @ETC_Energy piece #MindtheCarbonGap energy-transitions.org/publi…

Using 7 integrated assessment models, we find a range in the median level of global warming in 2100 of 2.2-2.9°C & rising based on current policies or NDCs. CO₂ is a cumulative pollutant, so how much do CO₂ emissions after 2050 matter? rdcu.be/cBOBr 1/

Did you raise an eyebrow when you heard confident projections during #COP26 of global warming in 2100 if we follow current policies (~2.6°C)? Surely, surely, there must be more uncertainty? Well, yes, we coincidentally have a new paper on that! nature.com/articles/s41558-0… 1/🧵

False precision to climate outcomes given during COP26 may lead countries to believe good progress is made, when the opposite may indeed be the case. Our findings indicate current policies & policy pledges can still lead to warming outcomes of 3°C in 2100. nature.com/articles/s41558-0…
