Showing again the exquisite sensitivity of the transition to adulthood for onset of mental illness.
Our new paper on age at #migration and #psychosis risk is out today in @PLOSMentalHlth. We find that migrating during adolescence, defined in the study as 11-17 years old, is associated with almost twice the risk of psychosis cf. non-migrants. journals.plos.org/mentalheal… 1/n

But if this is a signal, it adds to the literature that suggests selected interventions in at-risk groups - here extending to teenage migrants - could be legitimate targets for the prevention of psychosis. 6/n

Limitations of the study include the small sample size when stratified by age at migration & ethnicity, the case-control study design (essentially, cross-sectional) & missing data (handled via multiple imputation) 5/n

We know adolescence is a key period for identify formation, brain maturation & the emergence of psychosis. Migration in this period may disrupt these processes for some, requiring teenage migrants to form new social groups, learn new a language & navigate new environments 4/n

We found adolescent migration had independent effects in North African and Black migrants, with a trend for White migrants in this direction, but sample sizes became small at this level of stratification, so caution is needed. 3/n

Data came from 5 countries in the #EUGEI study of first episode psychosis on 2132 participants. The increased risk with migration during adolescence was not explained by ethnic differences in the sample, measures of socioeconomic position or parental mental health 2/n

Here’s a UCL colleague I can really get behind. What a delicious and clever piece of scientific scepticism.

Great to see @HummaAndleeb presenting her PhD work (in press) at #EPAPsyEpi24 on age at migration & psychosis risk from the #EUGEI study. Pre-print here: osf.io/preprints/psyarxiv/ew… Watch out for the published version very soon.
