Thank you @ProfMakris for your clear and concise commentary on our #PITT case in @BrJHaem. Take home message: test anyone with the combination of thrombosis and thrombocytopenia for anti-PF4 antibodies (by ELISA) and have a low threshold for starting non-heparin anticoagulation

This is my last-ever post on X. Since Twitter changed to X, the platform has become toxic and full of misinformation and disinformation. In the future I will be posting on LinkedIn and BlueSky.

Today is #WorldHemophiliaDay and this year's theme is that women and girls bleed too. Despite the development of brilliant treatments to treat severe #hemophilia in primarily men, the diagnosis and treatment of women have not received as much attention.

This is the press release about the new #hemophilia B gene therapy that has been approved in China. So there are now 3 approved gene therapies for hemophilia B, 2 in US/Europe approved by the FDA/EMA and 1 in China approved by the Chinese regulator. tinyurl.com/2jc74nb9

This is true in the USA. Not used routinely in healthy young patients with coagulation disorders. Mostly in critically ill patients with rather dismal prognoses for what it’s worth. Costs are much higher and general consensus is risks of known blood borne pathogens low. Until not

Thank you for the copies of the paper on the UK Infected Blood Inquiry that was published in @BloodJournal. It is interesting to see the section on lessons learned. Despite the @bloodinquiry, the UK continues to use cryo and FFP without viral inactivation. #hemophilia

It is subsequently licenced by FDA , EMA or other major regulator. In this case, Governments might consider paying for PWH to travel there for treatment. Good to see possible competition in market, especially with Pfizer withdrawing their licenced FIX GT, Beqvez 2/2

I understand it may be priced close to 10% of the US price for Hemgenix or approximately US$300,000. They could faclitate people travelling to China for treatment. May appeal to some wealthy individuals but I doubt Governments in many countries will send PWH there unless 1/2
Any idea of the price of this, @Brianhemophilia? Presumably there is nothing to stop patients from traveling to China to have it. It is difficult to believe it will cost anything remotely close to Hemgenix.

Belief Biomed and Takeda China announce licencing by the National Medical Products Administration ( NMPA)in China of their BBM-H901 FIX Gene Therapy. Interested to see if they pursue licencing from FDA or EMA which could make it a more viable option in US or Europe

There is an article about the UK Infected Blood Inquiry in this week's issue of the journal Blood. Unfortunately it is behind a paywall, and I do not have access to it through our university library. If you have access to it, can you let me have a copy?

Article on Generative AI in medicine published today in @NEJM. It discusses the potential uses and risks. One issue you can be sure of, is that AI will be embedded in the everyday practice of medicine in the very near future, even more than today. tinyurl.com/4sbjpjvs

If you are a scientist who is not using AI yet, this article from today's @Nature journal will be of great help. Whether we like it or not AI will be everywhere very soon, just like the internet.

Everybody has an opinion about racism, but as the author of this book explains, the plural of anecdote is not data. This is a serious book looking at the scientific evidence around racism. It will not come as a surprise to read that racism is still in everything.

Who cares about life expectancy?! Healthy life expectancy is what matters. Roughly speaking in richer countries you are healthy for longer. Costa Rica punches above its weight while the US ranks as a pathetic 71st. Great chart by @rubenbmathisen.
