This claim has been doing the rounds this weekend and given the text on the website it's an understandable conclusion. But we reached out to the ministry to verify today and no, it's not actually the case, and the website will be updated soon to clarify.

Despite what both Danielle Smith and, strangely, the Forever Canadian campaign's own website claim, Thomas Lukaszuk's petition is not for a referendum.
Wherein Danielle Smith claims that @LukaszukAB's #ForeverCanadian petition is actually a separatist petition and there will be consequences if people chose to leave Alberta. And no. That's not a typo. #abpoli #ableg #cdnpoli

According to the Citizen Initiative Act, if Lukaszuk somehow does collect enough signatures, the matter goes to committee, not referendum. The UCP-controlled committee is not obligated to proceed with a referendum kings-printer.alberta.ca/126…

Lukaszuk described his campaign accurately when it first launched, but the facts seem to have gotten telephone-gamed afterwards. Supporters, opposers, and even experienced journalists on the Alberta politics beat have since been portraying it inaccurately cbc.ca/news/canada/edmonton/…

at some point we need to add up all the money these schmucks are spending on trips abroad. these folks are addicted to travelling abroad on our dime. these multiple todd loewen trips where he's going to events that directly affect/benefit his business are insane.
Alberta’s biggest trading partner is the United States. We exported over $162 Billion last year- 82% of that being energy products. Right now the ‘National Conference of State Legislators’ is taking place in Boston and I’m grateful that Speaker @RicMcIver, MLAs @GlennVanDijken, Chelsea Petrovic, and @NolanDyckAB showed up to remind U.S. leaders that open and tariff-free trade is essential to the strength of both of our economies.

“Spending taxpayer dollars to go down there and do this—oh, Jesus, that's the crazy part,” said MRU poli sci prof Keith Brownsey. “I don't understand why Anderson or Smith or the others would think this is reasonable or permissible.”
SCOOP: The public spent almost $20K for Premier Danielle Smith to fundraise for PragerU alongside Ben Shapiro in March, almost double the cost of the premier's trip to Mar-a-Lago.
