We’ll explore love, memory, loss, and what it means to live fully, even as memory fades. Dr. Tobin’s writing is both clinically insightful and deeply human. Join us for a rich and moving discussion on Thursday, June 25. Join the Prohuman Book Club: bookclubs.com/prohuman-found… Register for this meeting only: us06web.zoom.us/j/8639839559… Dr. Tobin is also writing a series of essays in Prohuman Pathways called "The Lives We Read." Dr. Michael Tobin is a clinical psychologist and author—we are delighted to welcome him as our newest advisor. His essay, “The Library and the Pond: Borrowing Lives and Learning How to Live One’s Own,” is available on Prohuman Pathways. It speaks vividly to the tenets that anchor our educational programs, including library grants. In this love letter to libraries, Dr. Tobin reflects on his childhood library and how books become portals to borrowed lives that teach us how to live our own. Read the full essay (link in comments). Prohuman Library Grant applications are open! Learn more and apply (links in comments). Which book or library shaped the person you are today? Tell us your story in the comments—we’d love to hear it. Also, stay tuned: Dr. Tobin will also join the Prohuman Book Club this month.

TJ Bennett (@teejaybee6) interviewed his fellow @prohuman_org advisor, @shakamitchell, about the Come Together Music Project. The project shows how music has the unique power facilitate the emotional depth needed for genuine connection, even at work. "There’s a safety in using music to express something, because it gives you a little bit of distance—like, just the right amount of distance…. One of the guys… asked him from the stage, ‘What’s the song you picked?’ and he picked a song by a band called Everclear called Father of Mine. And said, ‘Well, why’d you pick that?’ And he said it’s the song that took him back to when his father died. Well, you do not go out to an event space on a Thursday night and expect to tell a bunch of strangers information like that.… But I think that the music really facilitates the conversation…. I followed up with him after and I said, ‘Hey, I really hope I didn’t put you on the spot. I didn’t mean to do that.’ And he said, ‘No.’ He said, ‘This to me is proof of concept. This works.’"
Thanks to TJ Bennett at the Pudding Factory for inviting me to have this conversation as part of his @Prohuman_org series. When Come Together Music started, I didn’t contemplate how it might benefit the workplace but the implications are undeniable. More healthy and authentic interactions at work will ultimately increase professional outcomes. Check out the full convo below - and answer TJ’s song prompts too! buff.ly/f2CAzF2

Prohuman Foundation advisor @JaredArmstrong_ spoke with @CBNNews about how his nonprofit @JABCAMPS is using basketball for recovery in southern Israel. To date, the nonprofit has renovated 17 basketball courts in conflict-affected areas, reaching more than 3,000 children. Bringing together Jewish, Arab, Christian, and Druze youth on newly renovated courts, the program offers safe havens where children can escape conflict, develop leadership skills, and build resilience.

As we honor those who gave their lives on Memorial Day, we also reflect with sadness on the recent passing of Bob Woodson, a civil rights advocate, a veteran, and a man who spent his life giving back to his country by empowering countless others. Independent journalist and Prohuman Foundation ambassador Alexandra Vollman was one of the last people to interview Woodson several weeks ago. We recently published her essay featuring Woodson's wisdom on the power of personal agency, stories of redemption, and becoming "agents of our own uplift." The essay shares how Woodson lifted up heroes like Robert Smalls who escaped slavery, fought for the Union, bought the plantation where he was once enslaved, and showed profound grace by caring for his former owner's wife. Woodson reminded us that America is defined not by its worst chapters, but by our capacity to change for the better. Rest in peace, Bob. Your legacy of hope lives on. Thursday, May 28, we discuss Leadership as Relation by our own Prohuman Book Club host, Dr. Martin Kettelhut. The book asks, “How can we stay faithful to our soul’s deepest longings when the forces around us draw us away from the world we aspire to build?”

This story began as an examination of #civiclife in America today. What it became was one about what’s possible when we have a unified vision — and what’s at risk if we don’t. We're so excited to collaborate with the @prohuman_org on this one! #humanity beprohuman.substack.com/p/ag…

This National Teacher Appreciation Week, we honor those who unlock human potential and we contemplate the cherished role that teachers play in our lives. Recall the story of Anne Sullivan, Hellen Keller’s teacher. Before Sullivan’s arrival, Keller’s reach was limited. Full of potential, but trapped in silence, her world was small. Partially blind herself, Sullivan’s expertise and her belief in the dignity of her student changed that. Persisting for weeks, Sullivan placed objects in Helen’s hand and spelled their names in her palm. D-O-L-L. H-A-T. C-U-P. Helen didn’t understand at first. She grew tired. Angry, at times. Finally, a breakthrough came at the well. When Sullivan spelled "W-A-T-E-R" into Keller’s palm as the cool stream poured over it, Helen understood—a transformation that would lead her to great heights. The teacher-student relationship is one of our most essential social contracts. We entrust teaching, an act of profound patience, perseverance, and compassion, to those who recognize the inherent dignity and humanity of each student. At the Prohuman Foundation, we are committed to providing support to the people leading this vital work. If you believe, as we do, that education requires courage, grit, and compassion, and a devotion to students grounded in optimism, join us.
