Henry Nowak was just 18 years old.
An 18-year-old student who had been stabbed and was fighting for his life.
The recently released police bodycam footage is deeply distressing. As Henry lay bleeding on the ground, handcuffed, he can be heard pleading: "I can't breathe, I've been stabbed."
A police officer replied: "I don't think you have mate."
No family should ever have to watch footage like this involving their son. No parent should have to hear those words.
The primary responsibility for Henry's death lies with the individual who stabbed him. But the footage raises serious and legitimate questions about the response he received in his final moments.
Henry Nowak should have had his cries for help taken seriously. He should have been treated first and foremost as a victim in urgent need of medical assistance.
My thoughts are with Henry's family and friends, who continue to live with an unimaginable loss. They deserve answers, accountability where necessary, and confidence that lessons will be learned.
RIP Henry Nowak.
