Update on the Base Bridge Incident What Happened Earlier today, the Constellation Bridge team identified that the hot wallets used to facilitate bridging operations had been drained. An unauthorized actor transferred all funds from these wallets on both the DAG and Base networks. On the DAG side, attempts were made to move the funds to KuCoin, but the affected addresses were quickly identified and blocked. On the Base network, the stolen funds were moved to decentralized exchanges (DEXs) and swapped. Shortly afterward, unauthorized access was detected on the ERC-20 contracts for DAG and DOR on Base. The attacker was able to mint additional tokens and sell them on DEXs, which caused a temporary price crash for those tokens. Investigation Because the attacker gained access to two unrelated sets of keys (the bridge hot wallet keys and ERC-20 contract owner keys), it became clear that this was not an attack on the bridge infrastructure itself - since the ERC-20 owner keys are never stored within that system. Our investigation identified a single team member who had access to both sets of keys. We believe this individual inadvertently ran a web-based codebase on their development machine that contained malicious code, which scanned the local file system and extracted stored keys. The malicious code and attack vector have been identified, and the investigation into how this occurred is ongoing. Next Steps and Solutions This incident requires significant corrective action. The following measures are being taken: - Contract replacement: We will retire the existing DAG and DOR contracts on Base, deploy new ones, and airdrop equivalent tokens to all holders based on a snapshot taken immediately before the attack. - Key and contract rotation: As a precaution, we will rotate ownership and permissions on other affected or potentially exposed contracts, including veLTX. - Bridge restoration: Once the new contracts are deployed and enhanced operational safeguards are implemented, bridge funds will be replenished, and the bridge will be reopened. Final Note We take this incident extremely seriously. However, it’s important to emphasize that no user funds were ever at risk. The bridge was intentionally designed with limited funds in its hot wallets to contain the impact of such events. Thanks to these safeguards and a swift response from the team, the breach was contained, and damage was minimized. Our priority now is to complete verification, restore affected systems, and reinforce our security posture to support a resilient future for the community. We deeply appreciate the community’s patience, trust, and understanding as we finalize remediation efforts. Details on the exact timing of the corrective actions will be shared soon. An update on @PacaSwap: Pacaswap, the inaugural DEX on @Conste11ation Network, has been live for just under six weeks and it is already showing what is possible on the network: strong community participation and LP staking, healthy TVL, and sustained trading volume. That momentum reflects real demand and enthusiasm for projects on the network that is exciting to see. Thank you to everyone who has contributed liquidity, run a validator node, participated in governance, or provided feedback. My personal story has always been to pave a path that was unorthodox. What drives me is the unconventional. Growing up in Indiana gave me a work ethic and possibly the drive to be unorthodox and break through a mold that domesticated us growing up. More importantly, an unconventional mindset allowed me to find opportunities where others were busy with conventional practices. @Conste11ation has been a manifestation of this unorthodox path. Not just my path, but those that work here and those that positively follow and champion the Constellation story. You are the outlier; we are the outliers - you too are unorthodox. Our successes and failures have been because we followed a conscious path of wanting a different narrative. Wanting to BE different. I believe that many people in our industry, web3, are converging to some normalized path and the unconventional are measured against the conventional path. The opportunity is not where people/companies have already been, but where they are going and the wisdom they have to get them to that destination. The realization of this normalized path comes in the vein of measuring all ecosystems against the same metrics while failing to ignore the vision where those metrics don’t matter. At Constellation, our thinking is different. We want people to understand what we do, but we want to challenge the norm. We have always believed that our narrative was to unlock the businesses to business (b2b) model and separate from the direct to consumer play where the crypto was the sole product. It hasn’t been easy with political pressures of former years and a volatile perspective of web3 and blockchain. Establishing B2B products, where the customer is not savvy on web3, requires a shift in communicating through value propositions while establishing customer support for businesses. It also requires trends to emerge that unlock wealth creation and reduce costs. Data verification as a whole unlocks value in gross data by creating actionable insights. Digital Evidence establishes a template for creating digital standards where the application provides multi-party transparency for industries that serve multiple vendors, providers, and users all with different data rights and usage. Furthermore, Digital Evidence is the metadata oracle to ascertain the validity of certain assets. Oracles are standards for reporting, collecting, and creating actionable data dependencies. A world with RWAs will need a verifiable oracle that says the assets are what they say. This truly unlocks actionable insights, trust, and liquidity in a global perspective. Data collection and verification standards aren't just about validations, it is about verifying domain and human specific language to create causal relationships (an early solution to AI’s largest problem of feeding LLM’s with new data). Aren’t we as humans all about causal relationships? Our DEX being released is not just about a DEX for a web3 ecosystem, but it drives new creative thinking in how other illiquid assets can be swapped and freely traded… given they have the right digital evidence behind it. Constellation is a hybrid approach of web3 and existing systems infrastructure. Our mission is to bring the next frontier of digital transformation to existing businesses and allow them to freely use web3 where web3 makes sense. Everything is an experiment to see what works with our community and what doesn’t. Experimentation is the foundation of marketing and it is the foundation of intellectual expansion. Constellation is our gateway to experimenting with unconventional opportunities. This is where the largest opportunity of the future exists. We don't compare ourselves to the past and we will only entertain some conventional paths in so much that it serves the greater community.
