👁️ Festive & sporting assemblies must never be exploited as windows for mass surveillance, including using AI & biometrics. International standards (GC37) are clear: mass tracking & profiling unlawfully infringe rights and create a severe chilling effect on civic life. (2/5)

Remember the South Africans who left home after the Soweto Uprising to continue the struggle in exile. Across Africa, nations such as Zambia, Tanzania, Botswana, Mozambique, Angola, Eswatini and Lesotho opened their doors, offering refuge, education and hope. These young people sacrificed family, comfort and certainty so that future generations could live in freedom. Their struggle became Africa’s struggle. Today we remember their courage, reflect on their sacrifice, and recommit ourselves to building the democratic South Africa they dreamed of. #YouthInExile #RememberReflectRebuild #YouthBuildSA

Dr Dineo Skosana from Wits University writes in a very simple way how coal-mining, which feeds Eskom, has led a lot of families in KZN and Mpumalanga to lose their family graves and their homes, both during colonialism/apartheid and up to today. wits.ac.za/news/latest-news/…

Thread - The conduct of police during the recent anti-migration marches raises serious concerns about the failure to uphold the Regulation of Gatherings Act (RGA) and the constitutional obligation to protect the dignity and safety of ALL people in South Africa.
