#entomology Working on pinning and preserving some specimens for my internship! So far, the moths are my favorites when pinning! So delicate! #lepidoptera!

Did you know that some species of female dragonflies tend to play dead when they want to avoid unwanted mating? They will stop mid-flight, and go crashing to the floor. Then, the dragonflies stay absolutely still.

Dragonflies were way bigger in the past compared to the present. Scientists decided to conduct research on these cool insects to see how large they could get with oxygen levels from 300 million years ago. The dragonflies were 15% larger. @PurdueSciComm@PurdueInsects#dragonfly

Did you know that a certain species of dragonfly holds the record for the longest migration of an insect? They are called Pantala flavescens, a.k.a globe skimmer dragonfly, and they migrate across the Indian Ocean. So small, but so tough.

Spooky Dragonfly Myth:
Did you know that dragonflies, commonly referred to as "Devil's darning needles", were used to scare children into behaving? It was said that they would come to sew eyes, mouths, and ears together as punishment.

Winter's here, and so are those pesky indoor pests! Idkaby, but im still battling drain flies and fungus gnats. But before you use any stone pesticides, try hot/warm water dishsoap, and neem oil first! #eco-friendly alternatives. #indoorpests. @PurdueSciComm

Fun fact: A dragonfly wing color could be dependent on the climate. Dragonflies in colder areas tend to have darker colors while dragonflies in warmer areas would have less. Darker wings would help capture more heat from the sun.

@PurdueSciComm@PurdueInsects Pesticides can leach into soil and water after being applied to fields and harm beneficial insects like #pollinators! A 2014 study found that #pesticides altered the flight pattern of #bees, affecting their ability to make it home to their hives 🐝

Did you know? When determining that dung beetles navigate by the Milky Way, Dacke and Byrn put little cardboard caps on several beetles to see how it affected their orientation. Cute! @PurdueSciComm#entomology

I know these are older pictures, but wanted to point out that sometime drawings can't replace the real thing. Just because insects are relatively small, doesn't make them simple organisms at all! @PurdueSciComm#PurdueInsects#EntomolgoyLabs#disectionLab

How neat! Insect pests can be a factor in causing crops distress and leading to a decreased yield. The plant version of the nervous system already communicates with other plants, but now it’s time for farmers to benefit as well🤠🪲🚜 @PurdueSciComm@Syngenta#plantsignaling#bugs
Imagine if crops could let farmers know when they're under stress. That would be a game-changer!
With @Inner_Plant and @JohnDeere, we've developed a technology to help crops experiencing distress send fluorescent SOS signals that satellites can pick up, allowing growers to act fast to improve the health of their crops.
Here’s a glimpse at how the technology works. 👇

Hoverflies have a ‘spurious vein’ that is very unique to the species. This vein doesn’t connect with any other veins on the wing! There is only one species out of all 6,000 of hoverflies that does not have this vein! #entomology#purdue#neato

Parasites in cattle are a big deal. Look out for these symptoms in your animals to know when to deworm. Only deworm when absolutely necessary in order to prevent deworming resistance by these pesky parasites.🐄🪰🐮@PurdueInsects@PurdueSciComm#CattleHealth#Parasite
