Clarification: 1. The change from 90 days to 365 is for candidate eligibility, not voter eligibility. 2. The ban on paid petition gathering is for payment per signature not payment in general.
On Friday evening, the Republican leaders of North Carolina's state legislature dropped a big, unannounced, 36-page omnibus bill stuffed to the brim with new voting restrictions and elections changes. This thing is a voter suppression wishlist. Just some of its major provisions: 👉 Total ban on encouraging voter turnout: State and county board members are prohibited from any public statement "encouraging or promoting voter turnout in any election" 👉 Grants the Republican State Auditor total discretion to audit all machines, county offices and personnel involved in any election 👉 Reduces campaign finance transparency: the bill significantly raises the dollar thresholds for required reporting of dark money contributions or media expenditures, waiving reporting for the rest 👉 Requires voters to register with a political party a full year before voting in that party's primary election (up from 90 days) 👉 Total ban on any ranked-choice voting in any primary or general election statewide 👉 Strips some overseas voters of their eligibility to vote in any state elections 👉 Partisan staffing: changes up to 25 professional staff at the State Board of Elections from career civil staff to partisan political appointees 👉 Bans paid petition gathering This bill just dropped last night and may not be online yet (they like to take their time). We got a full draft of the bill here: carolinaforward.org/images/h…

"Is @DukeEnergy the biggest spender in North Carolina politics because they have deep sentimental concern for good policy, or is it because they like making money?"
May 9
Duke Energy spends a lot of money each election cycle to help its preferred candidates win, and, once they’re in office, uses lobbying to influence them to support preferential policies.  buff.ly/0TpKfyP

[NEW] Follow the Money in North Carolina Politics The campaign finance reporting system for politicians in North Carolina is notoriously poor. Not only is it 30 years old, but it's difficult to search, and even harder to make meaningful connections between what you find. (This is by design.) That's why, today, the Carolina Forward team is releasing the NC Campaign Finance Tracker. We're making campaign finance reporting easier and clearer than it's ever been in North Carolina. Check it out here: NCMoneyTracker.org

The NC Utilities Commission — at Duke Energy’s request (according to security) — is barring anyone with an electronic device from entering the hearing room for Duke’s public rate case proceedings in Lumberton. Including media, who have been turned away. #ncpol

Senator Hagerty says 80% of Americans support voter ID — so what’s the problem with the SAVE Act? Here’s the problem Senator Durbin already explained on the Senate floor: The SAVE Act doesn’t accept driver’s licenses. 50% of Americans don’t have passports. 80% of Americans support voter ID. Zero percent of Americans support accidentally disenfranchising themselves. The people most likely to lack passports: — The elderly — The poor — Rural Americans — Young first-time voters — Military families who move frequently The people most likely to have passports: — Wealthy Americans No one is defending illegal voting. The question is why a voter ID bill was written in a way that disqualifies the most common form of American ID. Senator Hagerty doesn’t want to answer that. Neither does anyone else who wrote it.

Tonight marks a turning point in NC. Voters in HD106 chose a future where working families thrive. For 15 years, extremists in Raleigh froze wages at $7.25, slashed taxes, and empowered Duke Energy. Tonight, North Charlotte said: enough is enough. Thank you HD106! 💜
