It’s a great time to enjoy the outdoors across Newfoundland and Labrador, whether you’re staying at a campsite, hiking the trials or spending time in the woods on your side-by-side. Keeping safety top of mind is important to make sure everyone has a good time! If you’re using an all-terrain vehicle (ATV), remember there are more people on our trails, roads and in the woods when the weather is nice. Ride at a safe speed, stay in control and keep an eye out for others nearby, especially children. Awareness is key! Always wear a helmet, even on short trips and buckle up if your machine has seat belts. Make sure that riders under 16 are properly supervised, and follow all rules and regulations. Stick to marked trails and follow local rules for where ATVs are allowed. A safe approach to summer fun helps protect not only you and your family, but everyone enjoying the outdoors this season!

Giving back in more ways than one. During a recent Canadian Blood Services mobile donation clinic at the local Royal Canadian Legion Branch 33, Placentia RCMP rolled up their sleeves to donate lifesaving blood. For one officer, it was an especially meaningful experience — his very first blood donation! Every donation to Canadian Blood Services has the potential to help patients in need, and this small act is another reminder that supporting our communities can happen in many different ways. Thank you to everyone who organized, volunteered and donated during the clinic. To learn more about becoming a donor, or to book an appointment, visit blood.ca

Congratulations to the six RCMP Newfoundland and Labrador police officers who were added to the Nick Coates Impaired Driving Team by MADD Canada today. Nick Coates’ Team is a program that recognizes dedicated RCMP and RNC police officers throughout Newfoundland and Labrador who diligently work to reduce the number of drivers on the road impaired by alcohol or drugs. The team is named for Nicholas Coates, who was killed by an alcohol-impaired driver in 2013. While this initiative bears his name, its purpose is to honour all survivors and victims of impaired driving. “Impaired driving continues to have serious and lasting consequences in our province. It is a unnecessary and unacceptable choice that affects not only those who choose to drive impaired but the innocent people on our roads,” says Assistant Commissioner Pat Cahill, Commanding Officer of RCMP Newfoundland and Labrador. “I want to recognize the dedication of our officers, along with the Royal Newfoundland Constabulary officers, that were celebrated today for their continued efforts to keep our communities safe. Every impaired driving stop and arrest has the potential to save lives.” To be part of the team, an officer is required to have removed eight or more impaired drivers from the province’s roadways from April 1, 2025, to March 31, 2026. The awards are classified into two categories: Gold (12 or more impaired drivers) and Silver (minimum of 8 impaired drivers). This year’s RCMP gold award recipients are: •Constable Shawn Hannaford (Holyrood) •Constable Stephen Miller (Grand Falls-Windsor) •Constable Kyle Patten (Glovertown) •Constable Caleb Pellerin (Traffic Services West) •Constable Janet Reddy (Holyrood) This year’s RCMP silver award recipient is: •Constable Darcy Kettlewell (Clarenville) Constables Miller, Reddy and Pellerin are all returning award recipients. For the fourth year in a row, the title of RCMP Top Performer was awarded to Constable Caleb Pellerin of Traffic Services West. Thanks to MADD Canada and the Coates family for their continued partnership and commitment to raising awareness about the dangers of impaired driving, and for recognizing the important work of our police officers in Newfoundland and Labrador. Impaired operation of any motor vehicle is a choice that puts everyone on the road at an unnecessary and unacceptable risk. If you suspect someone is driving while impaired, please call your local police or 911 right away.

On May 31, we hosted our first annual Mountie 5K charity fun run in Bay Roberts. Despite the cool weather, the day was clear and the atmosphere was full of energy. More than 100 people took part in the event, and together, we raised over $1,800 for The Helping Hand. We’d like to thank our volunteers and the officers who came out to pump up our runners, our partners at NL Events and the Running Room for their support, and to McDonald’s Bay Roberts for providing breakfast sandwiches. And a special thanks to everyone who laced up and supported The Helping Hand! We hope to see everyone again next year!
