We are based at the Early Cancer Institute, University of Cambridge. Our lab goal is to improve outcomes for cancer of the oesophagus through earlier diagnosis.
We are very excited to share our new paper published in Science today about the origin of pre-cancerous Barrett's esophagus (BE). Here is a story of how we found out that stomach cells can lead to cancer in the esophagus (1/9) @doctor_kno@johnlzhuangscience.sciencemag.org/conte…
Only half of esophageal adenocarcinomas (EACs) are associated with background Barrett esophagus (BE). New integrated epidemiological & molecular data from @RFitzgerald_lab reinforces commonalities between the two reiterating that BE is universal precancer.

Our Nature Medicine paper published today integrates epidemiological data and clinical characteristics from a prospective cohort of 3,100 patients with EAC, demonstrating that Barrett's is indeed a prerequisite to all oesophageal adenocarcinoma 💥

People with persistent heartburn or acid reflux will be offered a ‘sponge-on-a-string' test in select pharmacies in England for the first time. This new pilot will help prevent oesophageal cancer, and follows previous work in community diagnostic centres. tinyurl.com/3hxcdcxa
Just published in @TheLancet! We show that the capsule sponge improves Barrett's surveillance, helping prioritize high-risk patients for endoscopy & offering a more efficient, patient-friendly approach for low-risk individuals. thelancet.com/journals/lance…#GITwitter#Earlydetection
Proud to share that I’m a winner of the #NIHRImpactPrizes! It’s an honour to be recognised for research that makes a real difference. A huge thank you to my colleagues and @NIHRresearch for their support!
Congratulations to Professor Rebecca Fitzgerald and the capsule sponge team for winning an award last night at the first #NIHRImpactPrizes.
These awards recognise major improvements in health, driven by research and scientific advances. bit.ly/4iKTM2R@NIHRresearch
Many congratulations to our director Rebecca Fitzgerald and the @RFitzgerald_lab Capsule Sponge testing team for winning an @NIHRresearch Impact Prize. The judging panel recognised the team's hard work and research as "a leading example of impactful innovation."
