đź’ˇBoard diversity that stops at optics is diversity in name only.
New research by Shareen Holmer-Nasim (Royal Holloway University) explores what true board diversity actually means and offers a fresh take on success - one that challenges traditional career progression. While board positions are often seen as the pinnacle of achievement, Muslim women and business leaders in London redefine success through other means.
🔹 True Diversity in the boardroom isn’t just a visual commitment - it must translate into diverse thought and action.
🔹 Many Muslim women define success beyond hierarchy, prioritising faith, family, and true meaningful impact.
🔹 Bias exists, but so does agency - navigating the right spaces matters as much as breaking barriers.

ALT A visually structured infographic examining board diversity. The top section critiques the mainstream focus on gender and race in diversity efforts, particularly how it often excludes minority women's perspectives. The middle section introduces a research study that interviewed professional Muslim women and business leaders in London. The bottom section argues that real diversity is about diverse thinking rather than just representation.
ALT An infographic discussing perspectives on board diversity. The first section, "Board Jobs are Not Aspirational," states that many Muslim women do not seek board roles, prioritizing purpose over hierarchical success, while business leaders acknowledge board positions as a personal choice. The second section, "Discrimination Exists but Agency Cannot be Ignored," highlights that while discrimination still affects leadership opportunities, personal agency also plays a role in career progression. The third section, "Reframe Simplistic Notions," critiques conventional views on board diversity, urging a shift beyond gender and race to deeper, more meaningful inclusion.
