Strong recovery starts with better data, national leadership & coordinated action. Sri Lanka’s #CycloneDitwah PDNA helps chart a path from disaster recovery to long-term resilience. An important collaborative effort supporting risk-informed & resilient recovery planning in 🇱🇰.
.@UNDP Sri Lanka congratulates the Government of Sri Lanka on the completion of the Post-Disaster Needs Assessment (#PDNA) for Cyclone Ditwah-a major milestone for a coordinated, evidence-based recovery. The PDNA, mandated under the “Rebuilding Sri Lanka” Presidential Task Force, consolidates findings on damages, losses, and recovery needs across 22 severely impacted districts, helping align recovery planning, prioritisation, and resource mobilisation. UNDP is proud to have supported the overall technical coordination for this Government-led process alongside partners. Hazards don’t become disasters on their own, highrisks does the damage. In Sri Lanka🇱🇰, Cyclone Ditwah showed why risk-informed development matters. @AzusaKubota & I ✍🏽 in @FT_SriLanka on reducing losses through planning, infrastructure & risk finance. bit.ly/4bLpvin

A 24-hour advance warning of an incoming hazard can reduce damage by upto 30%. Better access to climate information can protect development gains at scale. Our publication with @WMO shows how risk-informed decisions build resilient futures: go.undp.org/Sfv #WorldMetDay

As climate risks rise, many parts of the 🌎 are becoming uninsurable. Without resilience, premiums rise & risk reduction stalls. We need insurance models that price risk & reward adaptation, I ✍🏾 w/ Lauren Carter & Miguel Solana from @UNDP_SDGFinance. go.undp.org/i92

#ThrowbackThursday💡 | When a cat 5 hurricane severely damages homes, technical advice & small resilient-repair grants on location can be a game changer. See how our service on wheels served BAH in 2020 & how it can help affected homeowners in western Jamaica. #ResilientJamaica

Loss & Damage took a major step forward at #COP30, but this progress will only matter if we strengthen systems to protect people on the frontline. Our @RHughJackson reflects 👇 undp.org/geneva/blog/next-ch…

Loss & Damage reveals the fragility of our systems - not just the force of nature. #COP30 moved the Loss & Damage agenda forward; real progress now depends on mobilising support to help countries build resilient systems. My analysis on the key takeaways: go.undp.org/i7g

Hurricane Melissa showed both the value & the limits of our preparedness systems. A systems approach to future recovery & resilience is essential against rising risks - aligning data, governance, planning and finance. My reflection on the way ahead 👉 go.undp.org/iht

The cost of disasters is ⬆️ - but so's the case for investing in resilience. At #HLPF2025 event w/ @MofaJapan_en @jica_direct_en & @UNDRR, we made the case for disaster risk reduction as a driver for sustainable growth, not a side issue. Let’s shift from response to readiness.
