In 1849, the apparatus used in the third act of the stage play ‘The #Prophet’(Le prophète, Paris 16 April), to imitate the rising sun, consisted of an arc lamp fitted with a large #parabolic reflector (below). Engraving below of Act IV scene 2 in ‘L'Illustration’ 24 April 1849.
By the 1840s, we could create a permanent electric spark between 2 conductive #elements slightly separated from each other. At the time, the #electriccurrent was supplied by a series of #Bunsen batteries, sometimes up to 40 or 50 cells (illustration shows 12 cells).
