The time has come to share that I’ve decided not to run again for Saanich Council or the CRD. It’s been a very difficult decision to make, especially when I reflect on just how much there is to celebrate about the last four years. 🧵1/5

Feels just like old times! Excited to be at #SCC2025 in @CityFredGov to reconnect with old colleagues, meet new ones, and be inspired by municipal leaders in community and climate action from across the country. @FCM_online @GreenMuniFund #sustainabilityconference #CDNmuni

Encampments across the country are growing – and winter will only worsen things for people dealing with homelessness. The urgency of the crisis is real. Our most vulnerable need the measures promised in Budget 2024. What's the federal government waiting for? Canadians expect a real plan to end homelessness. Let’s act now. fcm.ca/en/focus-areas/homele…

What an embarrassing day in our highest house of gov. Not even having school children present was enough motivation for MPs to act like adults. I miss the Jack Layton effect: modelling principled & issues-focussed leadership, causing others to look like buffoons in comparison.

No biggie. Also, we’ve consistently under-estimated the gravity and rapidity of climate change since we began forecasting a future with it. So there’s that. Climate change damage could cost US$38-trillion per year by 2050, study finds theglobeandmail.com/world/ar…

Interesting to observe many local gov reps are asking if they can apply the new SSMUH and TOA densities to more areas than required, and if they can require greater density than the Province is requiring The answer is yes. Also YOU COULD ALWAYS DO THIS

‼️ Holy smokes. It feels a bit like Christmas morning for policy geeks with all the provincial updates and guidance dropped today - so much reading to do! The local government planning landscape will be dramatically different - and very soon. gov.bc.ca/gov/content/housin…

Is there an app to tune out the heckling during political debates? Incredibly hard to listen to. I can’t imagine how challenging it is to participate in. What a crappy, deplorable feature of our prov. & fed. policy-making process. It’s as if we designed it to repel good people.

Looking forward to facilitating this discussion tomorrow! There are lots of municipal tools to improve housing affordability, which is now a priority for small & large communities across the country. (Also, we need WAY more sr. gov. funding for below-market housing)
We're thrilled to be hosting a national dialogue on #housingaffordability with municipal leaders! Join us for insights and solutions based conversations from our new toolkit supported by the @CMHC_ca. Register now! bit.ly/buildingaffordability #MunicipalLeadership

Impressed by the breadth of topics covered at @BCNPHA’s at #HousingCentral conference Case in point: here’s Virginia Holden of @yyj_housing sharing their approach to assessing and mitigation climate-related risks in the affordable homes they manage. #NationalHousingDay

We have the same # of public/non-profit housing units in Canada now as we did 30 years ago (~600K). Our population has doubled in that time. No wonder we are where we are. Just 1 of many alarming stats I’ve heard at #HousingCental

Wonderful news! Have long been hoping this would be the fate of this property - a natural expansion for Elk/Beaver Lake Regional Park.

And the food security chaos phase of the climate crisis begins This is all becoming very predictable. When things get tough, people & states turn inward to protect their own interests. And yet somehow, ramping up Cdn agri hardly seems like a priority cbc.ca/news/business/india-r…
