ROPME Meeting with Representatives of the International Maritime Organization The Marine Emergency Mutual Aid Centre (MEMAC), affiliated with the Regional Organization for the Protection of the Marine Environment (ROPME), held a virtual meeting with representatives of the International Maritime Organization (IMO) to discuss ways to strengthen cooperation and joint coordination in the fields of marine environmental protection, as well as preparedness and response to marine pollution incidents. During the meeting, the IMO representatives commended the continuous cooperation and the prompt and effective support provided by ROPME in advancing regional and international efforts aimed at protecting the marine environment and preserving its resources. ROPME Marine Treasures: The Arabian Sea Humpback Whale… A Rare Giant in Our Sea Area Humpback whales live almost in all the world’s oceans, but the Arabian Sea humpback whale is considered one of the rarest humpback whale species globally. It lives in isolated groups in the Sea of Oman and the Arabian Sea, with its population estimated at only a few hundred individuals. Remarkably, it is among the very few humpback whale populations worldwide that do not migrate for a long distance, making it a unique biological treasure in our Sea Area.
