RIP and respect for Lee Fields, who passed away on this date in Pro Wrestling History, June 4th, 2000 at the age of 69. Fields was the son of Speedy Hatfield, longtime NWA referee and the sister of Roy Welch, Bonnie Welch Hatfield. He broke into the business in Dyersburg, Tennessee, as most of the Welch family did. Wrestled in the Tennessee Territory and eventually bought the Gulf Coast Championship Wrestling Territory from Buddy Fuller in 1958 when Fuller went to run and book Memphis. Fields had an amazing run with the little Gulf Coast Territory which stretch from Mobile, Alabama to Pensacola, Florida. He owned it from 1958 through 1977, when he sold it to Fuller’s son, Ron Fuller Welch. He also was the owner of the Mobile International Speedway, which is still in operations today.
