(2/3) What is most concerning, is the definitive loss of biodiversity, by destroying these reserves that are native rainforests. We are slowly transforming this planet in a huge desert hostile to life and full of toxic waste.
An astronomer from @Swinburne Astronomy Online has solved a century-old mystery regarding how galaxies evolve from one type to another. The same study shows that our home galaxy, the Milky Way, was not always a spiral. 🌌
ALT This image from the Gemini North telescope in Hawai‘i reveals a pair of interacting spiral galaxies — NGC 4568 (bottom) and NGC 4567 (top) — as they begin to clash and merge. The galaxies will eventually form a single elliptical galaxy in around 500 million years. The galaxies both appear light blue and white in colour, with dark rust-coloured dust lanes visible forming a spiral pattern.

⚠️News: due to multiple causes including unusual high sea water temperatures, #jellyfishes#strandings are very frequent this summer on European Atlantic shores (Spain, France...). Near Biarritz, a rare dangerous species was seen (Physalia physalis).
Some beaches were closed !
We are currently making enquiries related to this object located on a beach near Jurien Bay in Western Australia.
The object could be from a foreign space launch vehicle and we are liaising with global counterparts who may be able to provide more information.

Even in the Poison Garden, this little guy is in isolation.
Why? Because it is one of the most venomous and dangerous plants in the world - if you touch it, the sensation is likened to being burned and electrocuted at the same time, and the effects can persist for YEARS.

Why do the BBC, ABC and other public media grovel before the planet wreckers? BBC will not broadcast Attenborough episode over fear of ‘rightwing backlash’ theguardian.com/media/2023/m…
Three years ago, new international rules took effect limiting sulfur in the heavy fuels used by ships.
Practically overnight, maritime sulfur pollution dropped 85%. This is good for humans, as sulfur pollution is toxic, but probably had unintended climate consequences.

Carbon dating, also known as radiocarbon dating, is a method for determining the age of organic materials by measuring the amount of carbon-14 (14C) in the material. it is also used in geology, paleontology, and environmental science.

Researchers from @KeeleUniversity have developed a machine learning technique that helps astronomers better estimate the ages of stars from the chemicals within their atmospheres.
The new research is presented at #NAM2023 by PhD student @GeorgeWPhysics.

#DidYouKnow?
This newly released #JWST image shows NGC 3256, a spiral galaxy located 131 million light-years away in the constellation of Vela. The galaxy’s core is radiating very brightly. Streaks of dust glow intensely red, in the center and across most of the galaxy. 🤓😁👇
An international team of researchers has obtained the largest set of detailed observations yet of the oldest stars in the centre of our Galaxy, the Milky Way. 🌌

The panellists call for UK governments and local authorities to put policies in place to restore our view of the skies and to mitigate the impacts of excessive light at night on biodiversity and potentially human health.
