Just because pupils can’t decode, it doesn’t mean they can’t access demanding texts. β€˜That will be too hard for my class!’ is often the response when I’m making the case for providing pupils in primary and secondary with interesting demanding texts. When we’re considering providing pupils with material β€˜above their pay grade’ there can be a legitimate concern that they will become disheartened if they can’t decode the text. If we want to avoid this, we make sure we are working to the principles of β€˜high challenge’ and β€˜low threat’. More here open.substack.com/pub/marymy…
