Reauthorizing Section 702 of the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act (FISA) is essential for our national security. When this statute is utilized in good faith by responsible actors, it undoubtedly saves lives. However, President Trump has broken trust with the American people and cast doubt on his administration’s commitment to fair, unbiased intelligence gathering by appointing Bill Pulte to the role of Acting Director of National Intelligence—the nation’s highest-ranking intelligence post.
Pulte has no national security experience, no background in foreign intelligence operations, and, in his former role at the Federal Housing Finance Agency, has a track record of weaponizing private data to investigate President Trump’s political opponents. Our national security apparatus is too important to entrust it with a partisan political operative. House Democrats will continue to be ready to negotiate a deal to reauthorize Section 702 to protect our national security and our civil liberties, empowering federal judges - not Trump’s political cronies - to adjudicate government surveillance operations.
