It's easy to get caught up in the day-to-day challenges facing our country, but every now and then you're reminded of just how bright the future is.
That's why one of the highlights of my week was congratulating Sam Crimaldi and Arav Shintre for earning the Congressional Award.
The Congressional Award is the highest honor Congress presents to young Americans, and I couldn't be more proud of our recipients.
Sam founded Kids4Kids Relief and dedicated countless hours to coordinating youth-led hurricane relief efforts. Arav completed more than 400 hours of community service, giving back to his neighbors and helping strengthen the community around him.
It's a privilege to represent young leaders like these and see firsthand the difference they're making. South Florida is lucky to have students like Sam and Arav, along with countless others who are already stepping up to serve something bigger than themselves.

The challenges facing our country are real, but so are the people working every day to solve them. It is the honor of a lifetime to represent South Florida, and I will never stop fighting for the communities we call home.

Ten years ago today, 49 innocent people were taken from us at Pulse nightclub in Orlando.
As a Floridian, that wound never heals.
We must never forget the lives we lost that night, and in their memory, never stop fighting for a world worthy of them.

In a perfect world, the Jewish American Security Act wouldn’t be necessary. But we don’t live in that world.
Jewish kids are being threatened. Synagogues are being bombed. And across the country, Jewish Americans are hiding their Star of David so they don’t get accosted.
Unfortunately, this bill is necessary and I urge Congress to pass it as soon as possible.

On National Gun Violence Awareness Day, we remember that gun violence is a preventable tragedy.
For those of us in South Florida, this day is personal. Not a day goes by that we don't think about the seventeen students and educators we lost on February 14, 2018, or the families and loved ones forever changed by that day.
They were taken from us for no reason other than going to school on Valentine's Day. No family should have to experience that pain. Throughout my time in Congress, I have worn orange and brought elected officials to Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School to speak to those impacted by that day.
A future where no family needs to worry about being drafted into the world’s worst exclusive club is possible. It just demands action.

It's time we remove FEMA from DHS so it can focus on one mission: helping Americans recover from disasters.
